Check Out Gustav0 Duarte’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gustav0 Duarte.

Hi Gustav0, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I was originally attending college as an english major with a minor in film. Through a friend, I was introduced to the tattoo industry and started an apprenticeship at Industrial Art in Harrison, NJ. I spent 10 years there, learning the craft and growing as an artist. I then worked at Tattoo Garage in Bloomfield, NJ. It was a great experience that further prepared me for the next step of my journey. In 2022, my wife, Nadeska and I, opened The Tattoo Guild in Boonton, NJ.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I have been fortunate that my road has not been filled with as many struggles as others. I came to this country as a young child. Growing up I have seen my mother work multiple jobs and do her best. I like to think that I have inherited her work ethic. There will always be struggles as a small business owner. Alot of late nights and lost weekends. It is all worth it as I look around at the amazing artist that I work with.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
My mentors always stressed how important it was to be a well rounded artist. I learned to work in a wide range of styles instead of limiting myself to just one. I am probably best known for my black and grey work, neotradition, and realism. I have always been a fan of horror films and literature. Horror icons are my favorite subjects to tattoo. This is also why we open a bookstore section in our shop. We sell books from our favorite genres such as horror, sci-fi, fantasy, and true crime.

Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
The app that has made my work life easier is of course Procreate. Making my designs on my Ipad, using Procreate has helped me make more detailed work and keep better organized.
