Today we’d like to introduce you to Katharina Miguel.
Hi Katharina, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Our journey started when my two best friends, who were getting married in 2020, had their wedding canceled. As their maid of honor, I planned an impromptu ‘we love you’ backyard party with their closest friends and family to still celebrate them. The setup was a picnic made up of boards glued to pallets that I picked up after reaching out to random warehouses, some Amazon tableware, and a paper flower backdrop as a focal point for photos.
I immediately started getting inquiries for our services since people were looking to do more outdoor events! From there, I went all out to build our company which started out providing luxury picnic services—hauling wood and tools to build 13 picnic tables up and down the stairs of my 3rd-floor apartment in Edison. No woodworking skills and just a vision of people celebrating outdoors with their loved ones.
We are where we are today through that same raw grit, a continuous dedication to growth and learning, and the incredible support of our community. That foundational hustle, plus consistently learning how to work smarter, is what allowed us to expand and deliver the high-end styling and floral design we do today.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Not at all. I had zero capital to build the company and was working at a nonprofit organization at the time. I funded the business entirely using my credit cards and going into debt. But I always maintained a standard of excellent customer service and continuous growth since the day we started, and that is what got us to where we are today.
Our company has gone through a lot of transitions—first starting off as a luxury picnic service, then naturally moving into proposal planning, and now offering full-service wedding flowers. With all these changes came a massive amount of restructuring: continuous financial reinvestment, building a team, streamlining our processes, and constantly learning, unlearning, and relearning what creates the best customer experience. It has been a wild journey, but we wouldn’t be here today without our incredible team helping us grow through every single stage.
As you know, we’re big fans of Yours Truly, Decor. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
At Yours Truly, Decor, we design elevated, unforgettable experiences for life’s dearest celebrations, big or “small”. What truly defines us is our heart for the client journey, understanding that a single detail can completely transform the client’s experience. We handle the physical design and overall aesthetic, specializing in upscale proposal planning, luxury picnics, elevated design for milestone celebrations, and full-service wedding floral design.
What sets us apart is how deeply personal and stress-free our design process is. Visualizing a wedding or a proposal can feel incredibly overwhelming for people who don’t know where to start. Our superpower is absorbing that visual stress completely—whether it’s taking all the random photos our clients give us or the scattered details over a consultation call, and being able to pinpoint what’s important to them. We make the entire process feel collaborative, enjoyable, and smooth.
I’m proud that our brand is based on skilled artistry and intentional styling built from years of training and teamwork. We don’t just offer standard packages that anyone can replicate. Our team is highly trained to bring customized visions to life; we treat every beach proposal, backyard gathering, or wedding ballroom like a living, breathing work of art tailored to that specific love story. We want your readers to know that when they work with us, they are gaining a passionate team that brings artistry and genuine care to their big day.
Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Whether it’s a mentor, an educational program, or general networking — I 100% recommend investing in perfecting your skills and learning the business side of things. I spent the first three years learning mostly from YouTube and other online sources, operating from the perspective that all the information I needed was free.
The reality is that when it comes to true business expertise and specialized work like floristry, you’ll learn much more directly from professionals. Beyond that, there is nothing more valuable than having a community to support you through the rollercoaster ride of entrepreneurship. Industry connections don’t just help protect your bottom line through referrals, but you get to learn from so many other great businesses and step out of your little world when things get tough.
We would have saved so much time, and likely grown our business much faster if we invested in learning and networking sooner. I’m glad we eventually did because it’s built a foundation for us to consistently grow throughout the years, rather than relying on virality or fluctuating seasons to stay afloat.
