Today we’d like to introduce you to Alex Christopher.
Hi Alex, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
Black Moon began with a simple vision: to create a piercing studio that felt like more than a place to get pierced. I wanted to build an environment where body piercing, fine jewelry, artistry, and self-expression could come together. What started as a small dream grew through years of hard work, passion, and a commitment to doing things differently—eventually becoming Black Moon Adornments, with multiple locations throughout New Jersey. Today, Black Moon is about transforming piercing into an experience: intentional, elevated, and deeply personal.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Starting Black Moon has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my life, but it’s also been one of the hardest. People see the studios and how much the business has grown, but they don’t always see what it took to get here.
There have been plenty of moments when I’ve felt exhausted, overwhelmed, and unsure of how I was going to get through the next challenge. I’ve dealt with physical and emotional struggles, navigated the uncertainty of COVID, and faced setbacks that could have easily made me give up. But through everything, my daughter has always been one of my biggest reasons to keep pushing forward. I wanted to build something of my own, provide for her, and create a future we could both be proud of.
Black Moon has never been just a business to me. It’s something I’ve poured my heart into, even on the days when I didn’t have much left to give. Every studio represents years of hard work, sacrifice, mistakes, lessons, and a whole lot of determination.
When I look at what Black Moon has become, I feel proud—not because the journey has been perfect, but because of everything it took to keep going. I’m still learning, still growing, and still figuring things out as I go. At the end of the day, I’m just a person with a dream who refused to give up on it, even when life made it difficult.
And I hope that’s what people see in Black Moon Adornments: not just a business, but a piece of my story, my passion, and everything I’ve worked so hard to build
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
What I’m most proud of is how far Black Moon has come and the community we’ve built along the way. Growing from one dream into multiple studios throughout New Jersey has taken an incredible amount of hard work, sacrifice, and persistence. I’m proud of the team, the clients who continue to trust us, and the reputation we’ve worked so hard to earn. But on a personal level, I’m most proud that I’ve continued to build something meaningful while being a father and doing everything I can to provide a good life for my daughter. That will always mean more to me than any award or business milestone.
Risk taking is a topic that people have widely differing views on – we’d love to hear your thoughts.
I think taking risks is terrifying, but sometimes you have to be willing to jump before you feel ready. Starting and growing Black Moon has taught me that there’s rarely a perfect time to take a chance, and if you wait until you’re not afraid anymore, you might never do it. I’ve had to trust my instincts, take chances on myself, and figure things out along the way. Not every risk works out the way you hope, and I’ve definitely had moments where I questioned my decisions, but even the setbacks have taught me something.
My mindset has always been to dive in headfirst, give it everything I have, and learn as I go. I’d rather take a chance on something I believe in than spend my life wondering what could have happened. Fear is always going to be there, but I don’t want it making my decisions for me. Sometimes you just have to bet on yourself and be willing to do the work to make the vision a reality. Take it from me, I bet on myself 1000% of the time.
