Today we’d like to introduce you to Cori Barnes.
Hi Cori , thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Cori Barnes is a multifaceted artist, choreographer, actress, creative director, dance educator, performing artist, producer, and movement consultant whose relationship with the arts began long before she stepped into her own career.
Cori was raised in a two parent home surrounded by creativity and the arts. Her mother, Ethel Barnes, is a professional singer who performed on Broadway. As a child, Cori accompanied her mother to rehearsals, captivated by the energy of the performers, musicians, dancers, and creatives around her. Those early experiences planted the seeds of a lifelong relationship with the arts.
Cori began pursuing dance at an early age, making dance a serious commitment when she was just eight years old. Her training included classical ballet, jazz, tap, pointe, and other forms of dance. She trained at the Newark School of the Arts and Sharon Miller’s Academy for the Performing Arts (SMAPA) in Montclair, while also receiving training and mentorship through the Dance Theatre of Harlem. Among the influential educators in her development were Lisa Attles and M.A. Taylor, who helped shape both her technical training and her perspective on dance.
As her journey developed, Cori discovered that her artistry was bigger than one discipline. Dance became a foundation through which she could express herself, tell stories, connect with others, and eventually explore acting, choreography, creative direction, production, education, and movement consulting.
As an actress, Cori brings the physicality, emotional expression, and storytelling instincts developed through years of dance and performance. She continues to explore opportunities that allow her to grow as both a performer and storyteller.
Cori is also part of the podcast Milfshake, giving her another platform through which to share her voice, experiences, perspectives, and personality. Her creative journey continues to expand beyond the stage and into spaces where conversation, storytelling, and authenticity intersect.
Throughout her journey, however, one thing remains at the center: her faith in God.
Cori recognizes that her artistic abilities are not simply accomplishments to possess, but gifts that God has placed within her. As she enters this new chapter of her life, she is developing an even deeper appreciation for those gifts and the responsibility that comes with them. Rather than measuring her purpose solely by titles, opportunities, or external recognition, she is learning to honor the source of her gifts and allow her faith to guide how she uses them.
God remains her main source of faith, strength, direction, and gratitude. Her artistry is an expression of what she believes has been housed within her for a greater purpose. Whether she is dancing, acting, choreographing, teaching, creating, speaking, or mentoring, Cori wants her work to reflect the gifts she has been entrusted with while continuing to grow into the woman and artist she was created to be.
Today, Cori continues to dance and perform while establishing herself as a choreographer and creative professional. She has worked with organizations and artists including the New Jersey Symphony, independent artists, and recording artists such as Crystal Waters and Usher. She choreographs for artists, produces and directs her own visual projects, and provides artist development to help performers strengthen their movement, presentation, confidence, and creative identity.
Through IROCFIT SERVICES, offers private dance lessons, stretch sessions, and group classes for all levels and ages. Her work also extends into athletics, where she incorporates movement, performance quality, coordination, physical awareness, and confidence into the development of athletic and dance teams.
The journey has never been solely about dance. It is about faith, purpose, resilience, growth, creativity, and stewardship of the gifts God has placed within her.
As a single mother, I’ve navigated the demands of motherhood while continuing to build and sustain my career. Through sacrifices and circumstantial setbacks, my son has been continually the motivation to keep pushing forward. He is now a freshman student athlete in college, marking a significant new chapter in both of their lives.
Today, Cori is embracing a new era starting again, but not starting from scratch. She carries years of experience, relationships, artistry, lessons, motherhood, faith, and resilience into this next chapter.
She has always looked at her gifts differently not simply as things she has learned to do, but as things God has placed within her to cultivate, develop, and share.
From the little girl sitting in Broadway rehearsals with her mother, to the young dancer training after school, to the performer, choreographer, actress, educator, producer, director, mother, and creative she has become, Cori continues to honor where she came from while trusting God with where she is going.
She is more than just a dancer. She is an actress, performer, choreographer, creator, educator, mentor, mother, and multifaceted artist walking by faith, embracing her gifts, and continually becoming the woman God has called her to be.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My journey has not always been a smooth road, but I’ve learned to see every challenge as an opportunity to grow. The struggles I’ve experienced throughout my life have become some of my greatest teachers, shaping me into the woman of integrity, strength, and wisdom that I am today.
One of my greatest challenges and blessings has been being a single mother while balancing the many responsibilities of life. I’ve had to learn how to show up fully, even during difficult seasons, while making sure my son felt supported, loved, and encouraged to pursue his goals and dreams. Today, seeing him in college is one of my greatest joys and reminders that perseverance matters.
Throughout that journey, I’ve also learned that motherhood doesn’t mean giving up on your own dreams. It means learning how to nurture your children while continuing to nurture the woman you are becoming. I’ve gained wisdom through the challenges, grace through the difficult moments, and a deeper understanding of who I am. My story is not about having a perfect or easy road it’s about continuing to move forward, maintaining my integrity, and refusing to give up on myself or the dreams placed in my heart.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Being multifaceted artist, choreographer, actress, creative director, dance educator, performing artist, producer, and movement consultant .
What are you most proud of?
Without a doubt, my greatest gift from God my amazing son. Becoming a mom is something that still makes me think, ‘Wow, I’m really a mom! It’s my greatest joy and blessing.
What sets you apart from others?
I think it’s the depth with which I experience life. I feel deeply, love deeply, and I’m very intentional about supporting and connecting with the people around me.
What’s next?
My plans for the future are really about embodying what it means to truly live and be present. I want to remain open, grounded, and ready for whatever is in alignment with who I am becoming and the impact I’m meant to make.
One of my biggest dreams is to create my own multipurpose facility .
Ultimately, I’m thinking beyond accomplishments. I want to build something meaningful that leaves a legacy something that reflects my heart, my purpose, and the life I’ve been blessed to live.
