Today we’d like to introduce you to Destiné Harper.
Hi Destiné, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
My journey into the beauty industry started with waxing, but it has grown into something much bigger for me. I began my career working for wax studios European Wax Center and Waxing The City Montclair, where I developed my skills, built relationships with clients, and discovered how much I genuinely loved helping people feel confident in their skin.
When that chapter came to an end and Waxing The City closed, I had a decision to make. I could look at it as the end of something I had worked hard to build, or I could see it as an opportunity to create something of my own. I chose the latter.
That is how Véro was born. I opened my own private waxing studio in Clifton, New Jersey inside Phenix Salon Suites, with the vision of creating an experience that feels personal, elevated, and genuinely caring. I wanted Véro to be more than a place where someone comes to get waxed. I wanted it to be a space where clients feel comfortable, seen, educated about their skin, and confident in the person providing their service.
Building Véro independently has challenged me in ways I never expected. I’ve had to learn the business side of entrepreneurship while continuing to grow as a cosmetologist, a marketer, and a business owner. There have definitely been moments of uncertainty, but every challenge has also pushed me to become more intentional about the brand I’m building and the experience I want to give my clients.
Today, I’m still growing Véro one client, one appointment, and one connection at a time. I’m proud that what started as a career in waxing has evolved into something that is truly mine. Véro represents independence, growth, and my belief that you can take an unexpected ending and turn it into the beginning of something of your own.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The Road to Entrepreneurship:
It definitely has not been a smooth road. I’m doing this on my own no investors, no financial backing, and no safety net. Solely independent entrepreneurship isn’t a smooth road at all.
One of the biggest struggles has been learning how to carry every part of the business myself. I’m not only the cosmetologist ; I’m also the owner, marketer, customer service, scheduler, financial planner, and the person responsible for making sure the business continues moving forward. There are days when I have to make difficult decisions while still showing up and providing the same level of care to my clients.
Building a business from the ground up also comes with uncertainty. There have been moments when I’ve questioned myself, worried about slow periods, or wondered when things would finally feel more stable. But those moments have also taught me resilience, discipline, and how to keep going even when I don’t have all the answers.
What keeps me moving forward is knowing that I’m building something that is completely mine and I’m building something bigger outside of myself. Every challenge has forced me to grow not just as a business owner, but as a person. I’m learning to trust myself, stay consistent, and understand that success doesn’t happen overnight. I’m still on the journey, but I’m proud of how far I’ve come and of what I’m continuing to build with Véro.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My Work and What Sets Véro Apart:
I specialize in professional waxing, but I see my work as being about much more than hair removal. For me, waxing is an intimate service that requires trust, communication, and an understanding of the individual person and their skin. I take pride in creating an experience that feels personal, elevated, and comfortable from the moment a client walks through the door.
What I’m most proud of is the environment I’ve created at Véro. I intentionally create a no-judgment-free zone where people can come exactly as they are. Bodies are bodies, and I see the body as a work of art. I don’t believe anyone should feel embarrassed, ashamed, or uncomfortable because of something that is completely natural.
What sets me apart is the way I make people feel. I want my clients to feel seen, heard, and understood. I listen to their concerns, respect their boundaries, educate them about their skin, and make sure they feel comfortable throughout their service. Whether someone is nervous about their first wax or has been waxing for years, I want them to know that they are in a space where they will be treated with care and without judgment.
Véro is about more than the service itself. It’s about creating an experience where people can feel confident in their own skin. That is what I’m most proud of, and that is the kind of reputation I want Véro to continue building.
Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
I’ve always had a love for art, so one childhood memory that really stands out to me is creating a drawing of a sunflower inspired by Georgia O’Keeffe, the American painter known for her beautiful, expressive paintings of flowers and nature.
I remember putting so much thought and creativity into that piece, and my art teacher saw something special in it. She selected my artwork to be displayed in a Silk City Museum art exhibit. I remember feeling incredibly proud seeing something I had created being recognized and displayed publicly.
Looking back, that moment meant more than just having a drawing in an exhibit. It was one of the first times I remember realizing that something I created with my own hands could connect with other people. I think that love for creativity has stayed with me and continues to show up in the way I approach my work today.
