Today we’d like to introduce you to Maria Polychronis.
Hi Maria, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My journey as a content creator actually started pretty unexpectedly. I was bored at home one day and decided to start posting videos on TikTok just for fun. I never imagined it would turn into something bigger, but my videos quickly started gaining attention, and I began building a following. As I saw my audience grow, I decided to expand to Instagram, where I’ve been continuing to grow my platform and connect with even more people.
A big part of who I am and what makes my content unique is my Greek Cypriot background. My family is from Cyprus, and I love finding ways to incorporate my culture, traditions, and humor into my videos. It’s especially rewarding to connect with other Greek Cypriots living in America who can relate to my experiences. Being able to create content that makes people feel represented or reminds them of home is something I really enjoy.
Along with sharing my culture, I love creating fashion, beauty, and lifestyle content. What started as a way to pass the time has become one of my favorite hobbies and has opened doors to opportunities I never would have expected. I genuinely enjoy the creative side of social media, from coming up with ideas to putting together videos and connecting with my audience.
Outside of content creation, I’m also a college student studying finance, with hopes of eventually pursuing a career in wealth management. While social media is something I’m passionate about, I see it as a creative outlet and a side hustle alongside my long-term career goals.
Looking back, it’s crazy to think that something I started simply out of boredom has grown into such a meaningful part of my life. I’m excited to see where it takes me, continue growing my platforms, and hopefully inspire others to put themselves out there and pursue the things they enjoy.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Of course, it hasn’t always been a smooth road! In the beginning, I spent a lot of time reaching out to different brands and companies, hoping for an opportunity to work together. Most of the time, I either got rejected or didn’t hear back at all. It was definitely discouraging at times, but I learned that all it takes is one yes to get things started. This experience taught me the importance of perseverance, patience, and believing in yourself, even when things aren’t going your way. I’ve learned that staying consistent and not giving up can eventually open doors you never expected.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I’m a content creator who focuses on fashion, beauty, lifestyle, and incorporating my Greek Cypriot culture into my videos. I love creating content that’s fun, relatable, and authentic to who I am. I think what sets me apart is my ability to connect with people through my cultural background, especially other Greek Cypriots living in America who share similar experiences. I’m most proud of the community I’ve built and the fact that something I started just for fun has turned into opportunities to work with brands and connect with so many people. I always try to stay true to myself and create content that I genuinely enjoy rather than just following trends.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
My biggest advice is to not be afraid or embarrassed to put yourself out there. I know it can be intimidating to post on social media, especially when you’re worried about what people you know might think. Not every video is going to do well, and that’s completely okay! Don’t let that discourage you or stop you from trying. One thing I wish I knew when I started is that creating content is so much more enjoyable when you’re being yourself rather than trying to follow every trend. Post what makes you happy, stay authentic, and don’t take yourself too seriously. You never know what opportunities might come from simply putting yourself out there!
