Today we’d like to introduce you to Yeny Ferreras.
Yeny, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My name is Yeny Ferreras. I am a Dominican-born artist who migrated from the Dominican Republic when I was thirteen years old. Ever since I was little, I have been passionate about fashion and creating designs for my dolls. As I grew older, this passion for creativity continued to grow, and I went to college and studied graphic design. However, when college finished, I developed a love for photography, through which I was able to tell stories and capture meaningful moments. Throughout the pandemic, I taught digital photography at BCC and started my small business as a photographer.
Through my photography business, I have created conceptual beauty projects such as Empowering Your Roots. As I started to become better in my photography, I worked alongside talented collaborators including Katie Levine, Charles Chessler, Toria Lexus, and Howard Cash, just to name a few.
Although owning a business is not an easy journey, I love being able to manage my family and work time while capturing and designing creative ideas for people. As a multidisciplinary creative professional helping brands, entrepreneurs, and organizations bring their stories to life through compelling visual content, this is one of the things I am most proud of.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
As a business owner, it has not been a smooth road. Sometimes I do not get booked for months, or I get booked to create content for well-known influencers or companies who use my name alongside their brand without pay. Most of the time, creating content for brands unpaid does not help sustain you or your bills — those have been some of the struggles along the way in entrepreneurship. However, I am grateful for the connections I have made on my journey. The goal is to make profitable brand connections and no longer take on unpaid brand collaborations.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
As a multidisciplinary creative, I wear many hats: a professional educator and an entrepreneur specializing in graphic design, photography, editorial design, and digital marketing. I am known for my invite-only fashion show photos, fun IG BTS content, and event photography. I am most proud of my Empowering Your Roots project, which focuses on beauty shots of women from the Caribbean showcasing their Afro-descendant roots.
One thing that sets me apart from others is that I am a very organized yet spontaneous creative. A couple of months ago, I was hired to participate as a judge for Miss New York US Nation, and although I was not capturing the moment, I had the opportunity to photograph and interview Miss US Nation Suzanne Budano and Angela Rodriguez, a well-known makeup artist known for El Método Reflejo. My spontaneity in doing BTS interviews is what captivates people and makes them want to work with me.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Something surprising that most people who might not know about me is that I am very disciplined, but once they get to know me, I am very easygoing and fun to be around when working together on set or a photography session. I believe that, as a creative, it is good to have a balance of fun and discipline when working on essential projects.
