Today we’d like to introduce you to Zanah Nesheiwat.
Hi Zanah, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I was a home base nail technician from 2013-2021. When I opened my first nail salon, it was by force. My father passed away and my mom couldn’t afford to keep paying the rent for his hardware store in Jersey city Nj. She put a lot of pressure on me to take it so I did, at first against my will if I’m being honest with you, but I learned to grow excited about it.
After renovating it to turn it from a hardware store to a nail salon, I learned that I was misinformed by the zoning department. They passed my inspection when they actually shouldn’t have, so when I found out from the building department that I could not make it a nail salon due to certain restrictions and laws, I put curtains up and serviced my client’s privately since I already had a full clientele m. I didn’t want to be a rebel, but I was locked into a lease that still had 10 months on it and I had bills to pay.
About 1 month before my lease ended, I was busted by the health department.
I could no longer service my clients in my salon so I rented a booth weekly and serviced my clients at a local spa while I saved money to find a new space.
One day on my lunch break, while I was out searching for storefront for rent, a truck to a moving company hit my truck. When I pulled over to call the cops., I saw the for rent sign. I called the Realtor right after I got off the phone with 911. I viewed the space to my 739 Broadway (my salon) that evening, and I signed the lease for it the next day.
That’s what gave me a shove into becoming a business owner.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road at all. While I was opening my first nail salon, I was grieving my father’s passing, but also working about 70 hours a week to make and save money.
My brother also passed away a week after I signed the lease to 739 Broadway. I kind of ignored my feelings and worked constantly. Coping mechanism maybe.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Nails are my passion. I love everything about doing nails from the prep to the cuticle work to the application to the shaping to designing the nail.
I specialize in acrylic 3-D flowers. I believe I’m known for my passion for nails and my customer service skills.
I’m proud of Landing a collaboration with one of the largest brands in the industry.
I believe what sets me apart from others is how I make clients feel when they sit in my chair.
What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I believe that being adaptable is what made me successful. I haven’t always been dealt the best hand, but I did learn how to play my cards the right way. Life isn’t easy.
