Today we’d like to introduce you to Camilya Cruz-Tate.
Hi Camilya, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I’ve always been an artistic person. From a young age, I was drawn to beauty and creativity, which led me to study both fashion merchandising and business administration in college. Makeup was always something I naturally enjoyed and excelled at—especially shaping and drawing in my eyebrows. Like many women, I went through years of over-plucking and over-waxing my brows, which ultimately became one of the reasons I was so intrigued by the idea of permanent makeup.
When I moved to New Jersey, I wanted to have my brows professionally done, but I quickly realized there were very few artists in the area offering permanent makeup services. That curiosity turned into research, and that research turned into a life-changing decision. At the time, I had spent nearly 10 years in the corporate world and knew deep down it wasn’t where I wanted to stay. Taking a leap of faith, I decided to pursue a career in permanent makeup—and it was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
Now, five years into my business, the journey has been incredibly rewarding. I’ve had the honor of meeting so many amazing women, each with their own story and reason for coming to me. Being part of their transformation is something I never take lightly. Seeing the emotional reactions—sometimes even tears—when they look in the mirror is truly priceless. It’s a blessing that my clients trust me with something as personal as their face, and I’m deeply grateful for that trust.
From the beginning, I made a commitment to take this career seriously. I invest in my education every year, training with some of the best artists in the industry to continue refining my skills and staying current with techniques. My goal has always been to provide the highest level of artistry and care to every client who walks through my doors.
Permanent makeup is about so much more than convenience—although it does save time in daily routines. It’s about confidence. I’ve had countless women tell me they feel more beautiful, more put-together, and more confident, even without wearing makeup. That transformation, both inside and out, is what makes this career so fulfilling for me.
I specialize in ombré powder brows, lip blush, lip neutralization, and permanent eyeliner services, and I’m proud to serve clients from my studio in downtown Millville. I truly love what I do, and I’m passionate about helping every woman feel like the best version of herself.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
My journey in permanent makeup hasn’t been easy—it’s been a path of growth, persistence, and resilience. When I first started, I struggled with confidence, which pushed me to invest in my education. I traveled to train with top artists, including in Atlanta, and spent countless hours refining my technique.
As a solo business owner, I also faced challenges like slow seasons, which taught me how to strengthen my marketing and stay disciplined behind the scenes. But one of my greatest challenges came when I was diagnosed with breast cancer. While going through treatment, I had moments where I almost had to close my studio—but I kept my faith, stayed strong, and continued pushing forward.
Permanent makeup may look glamorous, but it requires hard work, dedication, and perseverance. Every obstacle I’ve faced—both personal and professional—has shaped me into the strong, confident artist and business owner I am today.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I specialize in permanent makeup and beauty services, including ombré powder brows, lip blush, lip neutralization, permanent eyeliner, and eyebrow tinting.
What sets me apart is my commitment to quality and excellence with my craft and the experience I provide for my clients. I create a welcoming and relaxing environment—my clients often tell me how peaceful my studio feels and how comfortable I make them during their appointments. I truly treat every client like family, and that level of care is something I believe makes a lasting difference.
While I’m proud of being in business on my own for the past 5 years and the growth I’ve achieved, I’m mostly proud of persevering through the tough times and not quitting. I wouldn’t be where I am now if I did.
Do you any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
One of my favorite childhood memories, is the time I spent with my mom growing up. I was raised in a single-parent household after my dad passed away when I was eight, so those moments with her meant everything to me.
I remember when I was around eight or ten years old, we would go on bike rides together—sometimes even riding a couple of miles all the way from our house to my grandparents’ home. My grandfather would drive me back, but those rides with my mom were always so special to me.
It’s a memory that still brings me a sense of warmth and nostalgia, and it reminds me just how meaningful those simple moments were. Now, as a mother myself, I appreciate that time with her even more.
