Today we’d like to introduce you to Desirea Corbett.
Hi Desirea, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I was alwasy interested in being creative. When I was younger I took painting lessons and in college I majored in Art History. It wasn’t until I had my first Son 12 years ago that I considered pursuing photography as a business. I started photographing friends’ families and newborn sessions and things grew from there. I also have a few side projects in photography now. I like to create conceptual self-portraits and I also contribute to a couple of music blogs as a live music photographer.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
No it has been a struggle to juggle building a business and raising a family. I also have a day-job for a travel company so finding balance has been the most difficult part.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
In my business, I specialize in Lifestyle In-Home Newborn photography. I think what sets me apart from other photographers is that I like to lean into the beauty of the authentic moments. My approach is very relaxed and while I will help pose or position families, I do it with an aim to create more natural moments. Clients have often commented on how relaxed and easy my sessions are. I’m sort of like a friend that is coming over to hang out and happen to have a camera in my hand. After someone has had a baby, it’s usually a stressful time, so to be able to make the photoshoot something that is easygoing and doesn’t add to their stress levels makes me most proud.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Practice a lot and make friends with other photographers in your area. I’ve gotten a lot of clients from other photographers who are unavailable and recommend me as an alternative. I also go to my local photographer friends for advice when needed.
