Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexis Collins.
Hi Alexis, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’ve always been passionate about reading and writing since I was a small child. My parents said they would read to me when I was still in the womb, and that even as a baby, I had an interest in books, with my favorite book being Mickey’s Alphabet Soup (I could recite it by heart). There’s even a photo of me at two years old, smiling enthusiastically as I held a Winnie the Pooh book in my toddler hands. In elementary school, I was encouraged to start my own home library collection, so I would fold up pieces of notebook paper and write stories in them like they were real books for family and friends. I even designed the covers with my crayons and colored pencils. Once I entered middle school, I co-founded an independent magazine with my best friend and we would pass out copies of our latest editions to fellow classmates for a few dollars apiece. Middle school was also where I began my poetry journey. Inspired by the works of Maya Angelou and a series of poems written by Alicia Keys, I packed several notebooks with various poems and musings. My love for writing continued into college, where I majored in broadcast journalism at Penn State University and continued writing feature articles for various student-run publications. I also wrote articles for my media internships at the Lower East Side History Project and Defending Rights and Dissent.
When I graduated from college, I fully dived into my journalism career, gaining an entry-level role as a graphics broadcast associate at CBS This Morning (now CBS Mornings). Although I loved consulting with the graphics team and art department on visuals for the morning broadcast, I still had my dream of writing in the back of my mind. God later gave me the vision that I should launch a freelance writing business. Given that I worked the overnight shifts at my job, I didn’t have much time (or capacity) to fully develop a freelance writing business. Then the Covid-19 pandemic happened. I was laid off from my job and suddenly had an immense amount of free time. Even though I was depressed about losing my job, I transformed that devastation into an opportunity to finally focus on my business. I read books on how to become a freelance writer and how to form a business. After a few months, Lexie Writes was born.
After designing my first tester website myself and getting all of the logistics in place, I announced the launch of Lexie Writes in June 2020. I was apprehensive, wondering if I was going to get any clients, but they started rolling in! Since then, I’ve worked on numerous projects with multiple clients in several different niches, from businesses that specialize in home decor to nonprofits that focus on youth advocacy. I’m empowered and motivated to continue my work, especially after seeing how much my words have amplified and shaped organizations, mobilized leaders, raised awareness, inspired individuals, garnered job interviews and employment, and shifted perspectives and lives. I’m truly thankful that God has blessed me with the opportunity to move in my purpose and continue to do what I love. There are times when I think about how Lexie Writes was just a concept from the confines of my bedroom, and now it’s an expanding entity that has served clients domestically and internationally.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
While there have been many amazing achievements and accomplishments along my business journey, there have also been some challenges. I think the biggest one at the moment is the rise of AI, which I know has been a hurdle for many writers and creatives. There are people who prefer AI over a human writer. Their arguments are that ChatGPT and other AI programs are faster and cheaper. However, I always stress that while AI can be used as a tool in some instances (e.g. making a brief outline), it should never be a replacement for independent thought, research, and creativity. I try to navigate this ever-changing technological world by forging and maintaining long-lasting client relationships and highlighting trust. If a client does give me an AI-generated outline or blog post and they ask how it can be improved, I’ll provide my ideas and suggestions or flesh out the text for them. I believe it’s important to serve as a reliable and credible resource, so you can remain indispensable. I’m also in the process of taking AI writing courses to further align with the times. Nevertheless, I will always still prioritize my talents and innovation, and will continue to write original works.
Other obstacles I’ve had were creating my online store. I spent a majority of 2025 building the Lexie Writes Shop. This was a massive project that required several alterations. I had to examine and try out several types of products before I found the ones I liked. I tested everything, including the fabric, level of comfort, coloring, and word/logo placement. The graphics placement was the hardest part, because I didn’t want the logo/text to be too low or high on the t-shirt when wearing it; this took multiple drafts before I was satisfied with the final design. I also changed the phrases on my mugs a few times, exchanging ideas with my partner before finally settling on the right wording. There were some setbacks with the email subscription button and product descriptions and images, but thanks to my fantastic web designer, everything looks wonderful and I’m excited to launch!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I’m the founder and CEO of Lexie Writes, a professional writing and content creation business for organizations and professionals who want to further unlock their stories and make a lasting impression at an affordable price. I started Lexie Writes in 2020, and specialize in providing compelling and transformative text that expertly captures the client’s vision, while giving their brand the voice it deserves. I create career documents, from captivating resumes and cover letters to attention-grabbing LinkedIn profiles and professional biographies. I also offer a vast array of services, including articles, blog posts, books, product descriptions, newsletters, business plans, editing support, college essay consultations, website copy, and social media content. Additionally, I conceptualize and produce flyers, reels, and other stunning infographics that engage viewers. I love conferring with clients to express their ideas, while using the finished product to strategically speak to their target audiences across diverse lenses and formats.
Lexie Writes blossomed from an idea that I played around with in my room after I got laid off from my full-time job during the pandemic, to a thriving company that has devised content for some phenomenal people over the years. I’ve had the opportunity to collaborate with fellow entrepreneurs, nonprofits, lawyers, medical professionals, celebrities and influencers, creatives, fashion designers, educators, news publications, specialty blogs, and more! God has blessed me tremendously and I’m passionate about using the abilities He bestowed upon me to help others.
I ensure quality, consistency, timeliness, integrity, and exemplary customer service. I pride myself on my work ethic, seamless communication, and attention to detail. When I complete a project, I always make sure my clients are satisfied with the finished result. I guarantee that the project is not only delivered in a timely fashion and that it’s to the client’s liking, but that my office hours are almost always open, so I can promptly answer their questions and address any potential concerns. How a project is handled is just as important as the product itself, which is why I actively practice being attentive, energetic, and present. In my view, working with clients is a collaborative partnership, and I diligently make sure they’re included in every stage. I’m continuously reminded of why I’m devoted to what I do whenever a client expresses their enthusiasm, excitement, or gratitude for a project that I executed for them. I strive to always cultivate a positive and productive environment and experience for clients. Witnessing their joy and wonder mobilizes me to keep going. I have people approach me telling me that a friend or colleague of theirs recommended me to them and how that client enjoyed working with me. That’s heartwarming to hear and I’m truly humbled that my clients entrust me with these amazing projects.
Furthermore, I’m also the author of my independently-published poetry book, Embracing Changes. This book is a compilation of poems I wrote during my teen years and explores a multitude of themes and topics, such as love, faith, relationships, grief, gratitude, and coming-of-age. It’s available on Amazon and I encourage all ages to read it, especially those going through a transitional period in their lives. I dedicated it to my grandmother, who passed away during my senior year of college. She was one of my biggest supporters and inspirations and loved when I read my poems to her.
I’m just in awe of how far my brand has come. I’m now presenting at tons of dynamic expos and further establishing myself and getting my name out there. I also have several exciting projects in development that I can’t wait to announce! This is all thanks to God.
Alright, so to wrap up, is there anything else you’d like to share with us?
I’m launching the Lexie Writes Shop! This was a labor of love that took almost a year to complete. I have a stacked catalog of Lexie Writes swag, from mugs to hats to t-shirts, that’s fashionable and practical. I knew I wanted to start an online store, but wasn’t sure about which items to feature, until I had an inspirational conversation with one of the vendors at my church’s Black Business Expo who encouraged me to build a virtual shop. Every product was meticulously researched, tested, and sourced for maximum quality and comfortability, while boasting beautiful and unique sayings and designs. I’m very proud of my store knowing how much effort went into it. I can’t wait to officially open it soon!
Moreover, I recently earned my Professional Grant Writing certification from the San Diego State University! I’m thrilled to now add grant writing to my list of services. If you’re a nonprofit applying for grants, please don’t hesitate to contact me! I research funding opportunities, create customized letters of inquiry (LOIs), craft strong proposals that adhere to funder requirements, and prepare detailed project descriptions and project budgets.
Lastly, I’m offering live writing workshops in several writing disciplines, including book writing, blog writing, copywriting, and creative writing. If you’re a beginner who’s interested in strengthening your writing skills, or a more seasoned writer looking to gain more in-depth knowledge into one or more writing concentrations, please reach out! I provide a comprehensive, interactive, and personalized curriculum for all learning levels.
