Exploring Life & Business with Brittany Burton of Revive Consignment

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittany Burton.

Hi Brittany, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Me and my mother have shopped second hand our entire lives. She taught me the ways of a good deal! This knowledge mixed with my artistic passions and I was always drawing and creating as a child. I wrote in my 5th grade year book that I want to be a fashion designer when I grew up. I took classes in high school at the fashion institute and fell in love. I applied to one college, FIT, as that was the ONLY place for me. After many internships, schooling and my first corporate fashion job, I saw the issues with the fashion industry. My family’s encouragement, my passion and drive lead me to opening my own business that was a positive impact on our planet and community.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Nothing in life is a smooth road and that is not a complaint. I have learned that anything worth having takes time, money and work. I opened my own business at age 24, there were many ups and downs but I learned from any mistakes and pushed forward. I’d say the biggest learning curves were taxes, payroll, government requirements that no one teaches you. The other hurtle is the public, most of my customers are amazing people and I have learned so much about myself and the human psyche. There is a lot of mental health issues untreated, recognizing those signs and treating those interactions with patience and caution rather than taking it personally. The lock down and pandemic in 2020 was also a massive hurtle with no play book. It was sink or swim time. I’m thankful I understand technology and could sell online with live Facebook sales. The bills kept coming in even though I was mandated to shut my business doors. This was difficult but showed me I can do anything that I put my mind too. All of this has built my confidence and taught me to set healthy boundaries.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?

Do you have any advice for those looking to network or find a mentor?
Find similar businesses and ask to talk to the owner. People don’t interact in person any more and I have found owners are impressed and happy to share in person, vs phone or email. When I decide to open my business in Somerville, I went around town and spoke in person to business owners. This really solidified Somerville NJ for me as every business owner was friendly and forthcoming. Once I opened, I went to any local business owner meetings, this really helped me learn and got word out about my new business. Advertising your business is 50% of the job. Networking is key.
