Exploring Life & Business with Jamirah Porter of 287 Studios

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jamirah Porter.

Hi Jamirah, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My journey into the beauty industry wasn’t a straight path. I earned my degree in Psychology and began working in healthcare, but hair and beauty were always something I genuinely loved. Over time, I realized I wanted to take that passion more seriously and build something of my own.

What started with doing hair and building a clientele eventually became 287 Studios. As I developed as a stylist, I also became interested in the business behind beauty — branding, customer experience, extensions, marketing, and creating something that could grow beyond just appointments. That led me to expand into 287Tresses, my hair collection.

I’m still building, learning and refining my vision, but I’m proud that I took something I loved creatively and turned it into a business with room to become so much more.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Definitely not. One of my biggest challenges has been learning how to balance being a stylist with being a business owner. You can be talented behind the chair, but running a successful brand also requires discipline, boundaries, financial decisions, marketing, customer service and consistency.

I’ve had to learn a lot through experience — including what works, what doesn’t, and when it’s time to make changes. Those moments have taught me not to get too comfortable and to keep improving both my craft and the way I run my business.

We’ve been impressed with 287 Studios , but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
287 Studios specializes in polished, natural-looking hair extensions and installs, including sew-ins, closure installs, wigs and custom styling. I’m especially passionate about creating installs that look seamless, flat and effortless while still allowing clients to feel like themselves.

I also created 287Tresses so clients can purchase quality hair directly through my brand and have it installed in the same place. I want 287 Studios to feel like more than just an appointment — it’s a complete beauty experience where the hair, service and finished look all work together.

What I’m most proud of is building a brand that continues to expand with me. My long-term vision is for 287 Studios to become a recognizable beauty destination, not just a salon service.

How can people work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
The best ways to support 287 Studios are by booking an appointment, shopping 287Tresses and connecting with the brand online. I’m also interested in expanding into more creative partnerships, including beauty and hair brands, content collaborations, product features, photoshoots and opportunities with other professionals in the industry.

I love collaborations that feel authentic and allow both brands or creatives to introduce something new to their audiences.
