Today we’d like to introduce you to Maysoon Salem.
Hi Maysoon, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
My name is Maysoon Salem, I am an Optometrist by trade and just opened my first private practice called Eyeluxe Eyecare in September 2025. I graduated from the IIlinois College of Optometry in 2020 and then went to complete an ocular disease residency at the VA in East Orange, NJ. My story started when I was a young girl, holding my paternal grandfather’s hand who happened to have been visually impaired. He lost his sight as a young man, and due to unfortunate circumstances over seas, was never able to seek care. He taught me the meaning of strength, resilience, and is my ultimate inspiration. From a young age, I always knew I wanted to be an Optometrist, and be in a position where I can provide the gift of sight to everyone, because there can no be discrimination in this regard. My dream is to be able to give back to individuals in need in my country of origin, Palestine, and never have anyone find themselves in the position my grandfather was left in. Opening Eyeluxe Eyecare has been both one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences of my life, and today, I’m incredibly grateful to have created a practice that reflects my vision, my values, and the kind of patient experience I always hoped to provide.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Definitely not smooth, the path of Optometry has it’s challenges. Schooling can be very rigorous as well as the process of becoming board certified. I moved to another state away from family to complete my doctorate. And opening my own business has brought its fair share of obstacles, from permit holds, construction costs. But I wouldn’t have it any other way, I have grown immensely and continue to learn everyday.
