Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Maroney Jr.
Michael, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My father started the company, Universal Mailing Service, almost 50 years ago. I began working at Universal (UMS) 47 years ago. We started by working in my dad’s garage, then moved into the back warehouse of a local printer. Today we are in an 85,000 square foot facility. We employ 85 full-time employees and a variety of temps as needed. We produce over 200 million pieces of mail annually.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Every business has its challenges. We made smart investment in state-of-the-art equipment, without going into debt. More importantly, we made smart investments in our personnel Our belief has only been that you are only as good as your people.
We’ve been impressed with Universal Mailing Service, Inc., but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
We are a direct mail advertising company. Our types of mail that we handle range from retail, political mail, sample election ballots, insurance updates, nonprofit fund drives, information from cities to their residents, and others. We pride ourselves in working closely with our customers to obtain their trust, do an excellent job and save postage where we can. We have recently made investments in digital print equipment which offers highly personalized imaging and personalization all in one pass.
Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
The time when I was a young boy coming up the stair from my bedroom. My grandmother was coming in from the back yard. She made a motion that appeared like she was going to push me down the steps. i bounce of the walls in the stairway making a lot of noise. My Mom ran over asking what happened. I yelled out “Grandma pushed me down the stairs. We all laughed, once I confessed that it wasn’t true.
