Today we’d like to introduce you to Sean McFadden.
Hi Sean , we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, Brownsville to be exact. I take a lot of pride in that because Brownsville is not a place people often associate with young Black men going on to earn a master’s degree, lead organizations, and dedicate their lives to community work. That reality has always stayed with me, and it is a big part of why I do what I do.
My journey has been shaped by two worlds that I experienced at the same time. On one side, I was blessed to play baseball at a high level and continue through Division I college athletics. Baseball gave me access to opportunities, travel, structure, discipline, and exposure to what was possible in life. On the other side, I was also growing up surrounded by the very real struggles of the community, including poverty, instability, and the pain of losing too many friends to street violence, including my own best friend. Experiencing both worlds gave me perspective early. I saw what opportunity could do, and I saw what happens when young people are left without enough support, guidance, and access.
That is what pushed me toward education and youth development. I began serving as a Dean of Students in schools from the Bronx to Brownsville to Philadelphia, and in every community I worked in, I saw the same truth. Young people are full of potential, but potential alone is not enough. They need consistent support, strong role models, structure, exposure, and opportunities that help them see more for themselves. My love for the community kept growing, and so did my understanding of what it takes to help build stronger communities through education and supplemental learning.
Today, that work continues through my role as Executive Director of UrbanPromise Trenton. UrbanPromise Trenton gives me the opportunity to do the kind of work I know matters because I have lived close to the realities many of our young people face. Trenton reminds me in many ways of Brownsville. There is the same resilience, the same beauty, the same challenges, and the same need for people who truly understand the community and are committed to investing in it. That connection helps me lead with both empathy and urgency.
At UrbanPromise Trenton, we provide the supplemental learning, leadership development, mentorship, and resources our children and teens need to create different outcomes for their future. We are not just filling time after school. We are helping shape lives, broaden horizons, and change what young people believe is possible for themselves. I know from personal experience that education can change the trajectory of a life. I also know that one caring environment, one mentor, one opportunity, or one program can make all the difference.
That is why this work is deeply personal to me. It is more than a job. It is a calling. I know what it means to come from a community that people count out, and I know what it means to make it through with the help of education, mentorship, and opportunity. Now I get to pour that back into the next generation and help make sure our young people have the tools, experiences, and support they need not just to survive, but to truly thrive.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, it has not been a smooth road. A lot of my resilience was built early as a Black man coming up in baseball, where I often had to prove myself as a child and as an athlete. Growing up in Brownsville also meant being close to both opportunity and real struggle, including losing friends to street violence. Those experiences shaped my character, strengthened my purpose, and continue to drive the work I do today. Now, when I walk into rooms, people hear me and feel my vision, and that comes from everything I have lived through.
We’ve been impressed with UrbanPromise Trenton, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
UrbanPromise Trenton is a nonprofit organization focused on supporting children and teens through afterschool programming, academic enrichment, mentorship, leadership development, and summer camp experiences. We are committed to helping young people grow not just academically, but socially and emotionally as well.
What sets us apart is our commitment to the whole child and the depth of our relationships in the community. We are not just running programs. We are creating consistent spaces where young people are seen, supported, challenged, and given opportunities to grow. Our work is personal, community centered, and rooted in the belief that every child deserves access to the tools and experiences that can help shape a better future.
What I am most proud of brand wise is that UrbanPromise Trenton stands for hope, consistency, and real impact. Our brand is built on trust, service, and the everyday work of showing up for young people and families. I want readers to know that what we offer goes beyond programming. We help provide the support, leadership skills, and resources young people need to see more for themselves and move toward a stronger future.
What matters most to you? Why?
What matters most to me is impact, especially when it comes to young people and community. I care deeply about helping children and teens see beyond their current circumstances and understand that their future can be bigger than what they see around them right now.
That matters to me because I know personally how much the right support, mentorship, education, and exposure can change the direction of a life. I also know what it feels like to come from a community with real challenges and still carry big goals. Because of that, I never take this work lightly. I understand that sometimes one program, one opportunity, or one person believing in a young person can make all the difference.
At the end of the day, what matters most is creating real change that lasts, not just for individuals, but for communities as a whole.
