Hidden Gems: Meet Debbie Benson of Embodied Wellness

Today we’d like to introduce you to Debbie Benson.

Hi Debbie, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
I have always preferred the scenic route. Something in me revels in the ups and downs, and twists and turns of taking the road less traveled. I suppose it’s fitting that my life has followed suit. I have tried on many hats on my journey to where I am now. I began working as a police dispatcher as a young adult. I thrived in the chaos, but the reason I loved the job was that I had the opportunity to talk people through some of the worst moments of their life until help arrived. I really felt good when I was helping others, but if you had told me at that time that I would eventually ‘grow up’ be an Energy Healer and Massage Therapist I would have laughed in your face. I was compassionate and empathic but thought energy work and spirituality were ridiculous and had no place in the world we live in.
That all changed the day I almost died. It was years later and I was in a severely abusive marriage, living 1000 miles away from home with 2 babies under 2.5 years old. The abuse had escalated profoundly in such a way that I truly believed the only way out was ending my own life. I had a plan in place and everything prepared and ready to go. I took one final look at my children and realized that if I went through with my plan, I wouldn’t be there to protect them from their father. So, I cleaned up the evidence of my plan and put the kids to bed. Upon his return from work, I told my husband what I had almost done and told him that I did not love him anymore and that I was leaving him. He exploded and raged and threatened and threw me through a wall. I spent the next week planning our escape, and at the first safe moment I left with my two babies and have never looked back.
For a time, I was so full of rage, and despair I could hardly function. When a friend suggested mediation and prayer; I thought she must be kidding, but in the stillness of the late nights and early mornings I found beautiful mystical experiences in my meditations and my life completely changed. I became a student of Reiki and eventually additional energy healing modalities and techniques. Later I became licensed in Massage Therapy and Bodywork and further expanded my knowledge and training in Myofascial Release and Craniosacral Therapy. By combining these bodywork modalities with advanced energy work practices, my clients and I are able to create a coherence between the body, nervous system and energy field that can facilitate real healing within the bodies and lives of my clients. I created my studio, Embodied Wellness, with this coherence at the heart of every session. It is my purpose and my passion to hold space for the healing and transformation of not only my clients, but myself as well. Thank God, for that winding, scenic route that has brought me to my most fulfilling destination yet!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There is something to be said for being refined through the fire, and my route has been full of fire. After finishing massage school, I joined an amazing team at a wellness center that I loved being a part of. I began honing my craft and was booked months in advance. After a few years of building a career and falling into a groove of parenting young kids alone, my life once again imploded. My mother’s health began declining rapidly from dementia, among many other physical ailments. I became her live in caregiver on top of raising my children. If you know anything about caregiving for someone with dementia you will know how hard it can be. About a year into caring for my mom, I was involved in a car wreck where I sustained a torn shoulder labrum and herniated a disc in my neck. And so, I added rehabbing to my daily to-do list. Physical therapy, Chiropractic, Orthopedics, Pain management – all on top of an already loaded schedule. I kept pushing through – full book at work, 5 rehab appointments a week, dementia caregiving that kept me up all night, single motherhood. I was somehow keeping all the balls in the air when one day my body said ENOUGH. I woke up one day, and quite literally could not get out of bed. My body had completely shut down and was attacking itself. I spent 4 months completely unable to do anything but sleep 18 hours a day. I had to quit my job that I loved so much, as I didn’t know if I would ever be able to work again and the rheumatologist could not see me for 5 months. It was bodywork that saved me in these struggles – from the injuries caused by the accident to the inflammation from the autoimmune disease. I doubled down on receiving bodywork and energy work in order to heal. I received craniosacral therapy, began seeing a chiropractor that practices Network Spinal Analysis, and ran energy work on myself every day. I realized I don’t have to carry the weight of everything for everyone, found some new boundaries and cultivated more compassion for myself. I started getting better and better and by the time my rheumatologist appointment rolled around my bloodwork had returned to normal levels. I stopped requiring regular bloodwork and my symptoms went into remission. I credit this healing entirely to bodywork and energy work. I started feeling so much better I wanted to get back to my purpose and my passion, but I could not go back to the wellness center that I loved. So, I created my own private practice – Embodied Wellness, LLC.
I truly believe that it has been the struggles that have helped me cultivate the courage to go out on my own and embody my own truth and power in a way that I never dreamed possible. I am also able to find gratitude and JOY in daily life, even with the stresses that naturally come along with daily life. I would not change a thing!

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?

Our bodies are complex and layered, made up of physical muscles and fascia, subtle energy systems, and the emotions that intertwine them all. With specialized training and a finely tuned energetic sensitivity, I work skillfully and intuitively through these layers to release tension, break free from old pain patterns, and restore holistic balance.

If you’re seeking lasting transformation rather than just temporary relief, I invite you to connect with me. Let’s embark on your journey to true wellness together.

How do you think about luck?
I believe what we refer to as luck, both good and bad, is a product of our personal alignment.
When we live with congruency between our bodies, our intentions and our emotions we attract things and situations that some might describe as lucky. But lucky feels too passive – I believe we create our own luck through our cultivated coherence and energetic alignment.
I feel like what may have felt like ‘bad luck’ at the time cleared the space for all the good luck that has found me with my business. I have attracted Awards, amazing new clients, old clients who have found me again, and this interview opportunity – for example!
