Today we’d like to introduce you to Nick Schluth.
Hi Nick, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Before I ever had a real camera, I was taking pictures on whatever I had, usually my iPod or iPad. I always liked capturing things, but it wasn’t until high school that it turned into something more. A friend introduced me to wedding photography, and I was hooked pretty quickly.
It didn’t happen overnight, though. I worked at Wawa all through high school and for a few years after while I was building this on the side. Loving photography and running a photography business are two very different things, and my mentor, Alexander Ma, helped me figure out the business side and turn this into a real career. I’m really grateful for that.
Now I run Nick Schluth Photography. I’m based in Philly and photograph weddings around Philadelphia, New Jersey, and Delaware. I only shoot weddings, and getting to be part of someone’s big day never gets old.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Honestly, no. The photography part came naturally, but the business side was a whole different story. Nobody really teaches you how to market yourself, price your work, or get in front of couples who are planning a wedding. I had to figure a lot of that out while I was still working at Wawa.
Marketing was the biggest challenge. You can love what you do, but if nobody knows you exist, it doesn’t matter. It took a lot of trial and error, and Alex made a huge difference there. He helped me understand that side of things and treat this like an actual business.
I’m still learning every year, but it makes me appreciate every couple who finds me and trusts me with their day.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I photograph weddings, and only weddings. My style is documentary, which basically means real, candid moments instead of stiff poses. I want to tell the true story of your day, not set up moments that aren’t you. The best parts of a wedding are the things nobody plans: people laughing, crying, going all out on the dance floor. Most of the day you won’t even notice me.
I’ll still take care of family photos and portraits, but I keep them quick and natural. You don’t need to know what to do with your hands. That part’s my job. And if you want two hours of stiff poses in a field, I’m honestly not your guy.
The thing couples mention most is that I’m easy to work with, and that matters to me a lot. You’re picking someone to stand right next to you during one of the most emotional days of your life, so I make sure you feel comfortable way before the wedding. I stay in touch through planning, help with the timeline, and answer every question along the way.
I also customize every package, because every wedding is different. I don’t like boxing people into a set list of what they can and can’t have. I’d rather be flexible and figure out what actually works for your day, and I’m always happy to go the extra mile.
I’m really proud that couples voted me into The Knot Best of Weddings, WeddingWire Couples’ Choice, and Best of Zola for 2026. Those come straight from the people I’ve photographed, so they mean a lot.
When I’m not shooting, I’m probably hanging out with my Golden Retriever or on my second coffee of the day. I’ve also climbed a tree for a shot, if that tells you anything.
I’m currently booking 2027 and 2028 weddings. You can see my work at nickschluthphotography.com or on Instagram at @nickschluthphotography.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
I love how close everything is. You can be in Pennsylvania, Delaware, or New York in no time, so I get to work with couples all over. The venues I’ve worked at in New Jersey have been beautiful too, and every wedding feels a little different.
Also, being able to hit the beach after a wedding is hard to beat. Bradley Beach is one of my favorites.
If I really had to choose, the traffic is what I like the least. Getting anywhere near the shore on a summer weekend can be a whole adventure. But if that’s the price of getting to the beach after a wedding, I’ll take it!
