Today we’d like to introduce you to Precious Hill.
Hi Precious, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
After spending 10 years working in retail management, I got to a point where I knew I couldn’t keep doing that long-term. The long hours, holidays, and lack of work-life balance made me realize I wanted something different for myself and my future.
My journey into dog grooming started from a personal experience. After having a bad experience with my dog at a grooming salon, I became really hesitant to take my dogs anywhere again. I started grooming at home, watching videos and figuring it out as I went. I became really determined to learn how to do it myself, and over time it turned into a skill through trial, error, and a lot of hands-on learning. People started noticing and asking me to groom their dogs, and what started as something small slowly turned into something more.
In 2019, I took a leap and founded Precious Pawprints, building the business from the ground up. One thing that set my salon apart was its open-concept design, allowing clients to see their dogs being groomed, which helped build trust and transparency. I grew a strong and loyal client base and ran the business hands-on.
After becoming a mother, my role shifted. I stepped back from day-to-day grooming to focus on raising my children while still running and maintaining the business I built. I’m proud of what I’ve created, and I see this as a phase, not the end, with plans to continue growing and expanding in the future.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely wasn’t a smooth road. A lot of it was learning in real time while making sure every dog was properly cared for, which came with a lot of pressure in the beginning.
Another challenge was finding and keeping reliable groomers. My original plan was to hire and manage, but when that didn’t work out, I had to step in and run everything myself. That pushed me out of my comfort zone, but it also helped me grow quickly and really understand every part of the business.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Precious Pawprints is a pet grooming salon focused on making both dogs and their owners feel comfortable. We offer full grooming services based on each dog’s individual needs, not a one-size-fits-all approach.
One thing that really sets us apart is our open-concept environment. Clients are able to see their dogs being groomed, which creates a level of comfort and trust that isn’t always common in the industry. That was something that was very important to me when building the business.
Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
I would say don’t wait until everything feels perfect or until you feel fully ready, because you probably never will. A lot of what I learned came from just starting and figuring things out along the way.
Be prepared for things not to go exactly how you planned. There were a lot of moments where I had to adjust quickly and step into roles I didn’t expect, but that’s part of building something.
Most importantly, trust yourself. Even if you’re unsure in the beginning, you’ll figure it out as you go.
