Inspiring Conversations with Chani Getter of Chani Getter / Inspirational Living Inc

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chani Getter.

Hi Chani, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was raised in a Hasidic-ultra-orthodox-Jewish community and was married off as a teenager. By the age of 23 I left my then husband with 3 children under the age of 5 and began a journey of self-discovery. Therapy was one of my biggest support and where i learned to trust myself on the journey out.

As a single parent I worked as well as put myself through school, first receiving a bachelor’s degree, later my interfaith ministry ordination and then a masters in social work.

Over the years I facilitated support groups for LGBTQ+ individuals this was how I was featured on a short documentary film called “devOUT”

Later, I was recruited by Footsteps a non-for-profit who support people who are exploring leaving or have left the ultra-orthodox Jewish community. The work I do in this community has been featured in a documentary on Netflix called “One of Us”.

Over the years as I have been speaking all over North America and Europe, many have asked me to write a book, and I finally did. The book is called Mapito: Embrace Yourself. It is a self-help book that weaves my story and client’s stories to invite the reader to find discover who they are and fully embrace it.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not at all.
When I left my x-husband at the age of 23 with 3 kids under the age of 5, my parents and most of my siblings stopped talking to me. It was a lonely road raising three kids on my own,, especially in the beginning before I had built a new community for us.
My x-husband rarely paid child support. Between school, even though I was working we were really really poor.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Chani Getter / Inspirational Living Inc?
There are two different parts of my practice.

First – I am a licensed clinical social worker specializing in these areas:
1 – people leaving insular communities or fundamental religions.
2 – LGBTQIA+ individuals or couples
3 -People who are going through grief.

Second – I am also an interfaith minister who officiates weddings, funerals, baby-blessings and out-of-the box special occasions such as empty-nesting big-birthdays, divorce rituals, etc.

What makes me and my practice different than others is that I listen deeply, and co-create each ceremony to be unique and represent the people who we are celebrated or grieving.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I allow myself to be supported by others when I am not doing well and / or when I need support. I am resilient and have the ability to create chosen family.
