Today we’d like to introduce you to Gleny Serafino.
Hi Gleny, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Born in NYC and raised in the Dominican Republic, I learned about beauty at an early age. The passion for makeup and hairstyling came naturally to me. But as a daughter of immagrant parents I had to work in an office which says you have made it as an American. With no college degree, I landed my first corporate job in 2004 as an assistant buyer for a kids clothing store. It meant so much to me to be in the corporate side not just a store associate as much your kids my age were working at.
That job opened the doors for me to work in 2 other major companies, where I learned how to buy, bid, and create the planning and allocation of a business.
In 2009, I became the mother of a little girl who inspired me to pursue my dreams in the beauty industry and follow a passion that was in my heart.
I went to beauty school in 2011 to become an esthetician. I wanted to get a flexible career that would let me be a mother and still be able to work.
I graduated 9 months later, and I was expecting my 2nd child. While navigating life with 2 kids I realized I wanted to work for myself, that’s when in 2014 I opened up Skindex Studios. With 2 kids under 5 yrs old, I opened up my website with go daddy, I remember they had 5 templates and I had to use the hairstyling one becuase that’s all they had.
I didn’t know how to build a business, but I knew I wanted to build something my kids and husband will be proud.
The makeup world became a phenomenon that’s when everyone wanted makeup and hairstyling. I was able to be a published makeup and hairstylist online and printed. I worked in NYFW 2x with the same designer.
In 2020 I was working part time at a dermatologist office when the world shut down, I had to go home and homeschool my kids. After 6 months we were able to work again. I started the studio out of my basement and started taking clients while the kids had online classes upstairs. When the world was chaotic with no answers ahead, I build my skincare business and stepped away from makeup and hairstyling.
I felt like people needed the touch of a human to feel better and for them to be helped either with skin issues or with having someone to talk to.
Its been 6 yrs since i’ve had my studio and I love how close i’ve become with my clients. I get to hear the good, bad and ugly that’s happening in their lifes.
I realized i’m not just an esthetician I get to be part of so many peoples life and I get to cry with them and I get to laugh with them.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road defitnetly has not been smooth, I’ve had to bring my kids to shows while I promote my business. One of my first studios got broken into and I lost equipment. Another studio I had got flooded and I lost products and furniture.
I have had so many thing go wrong from my website going down, to clients not showing up or having someone not pay becuase she realized she didn’t have the money, but wanted to get the service done.
You name it and I think I’ve encounter it.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
