Inspiring Conversations with Juan of Pnuff

Today we’d like to introduce you to Juan.

Hi juan, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I started P-Nuff Crunch as a solution to a problem I personally experienced.

I grew up in Honduras and came to the U.S. with limited English and big ambitions. After learning English quickly enough to enter college, I initially pursued engineering, but soon realized my true passion was science — specifically how food impacts performance and health. That shift led me to food science and eventually a PhD in food science and sports nutrition.

After school, I spent nearly 20 years working for some of the largest CPG companies in the U.S., where I specialized in snack product innovation. I helped develop and scale products for mass markets, learning firsthand how great ideas become national brands — and where the system often compromises on nutrition.

While training and working in the industry, I became increasingly frustrated with the snacks available. Many were over-processed, high in sugar, no functional nutrition, or built around marketing instead of science. Rather than wait for change, I began experimenting with whole-food ingredients like peanuts and beans to create a high-protein snack that was clean, functional, and enjoyable.

Those experiments became P-Nuff Crunch. I bootstrapped the company, appeared on Shark Tank in 2019, and partnered with Mark Cuban. Today, P-Nuff Crunch is sold nationally and internationally, built on a simple belief: better-for-you food can scale without cutting corners.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth road. I’ve been building this business for over 10 years, and we’re really just starting to scratch the surface.

One of our biggest challenges has been manufacturing. Because we work with peanuts, allergen constraints forced us to change manufacturers multiple times, which slowed growth significantly. Instead of focusing solely on driving sales, we often had to redirect our energy — and capital — toward securing a new manufacturing setup or investing in building the right one ourselves.

Along the way, capital that could have gone into marketing and brand awareness was used to solve operational and manufacturing challenges. It wasn’t always the obvious or exciting choice, but it was necessary to protect product quality and the long-term viability of the business.

The upside is that those hard decisions built a strong foundation. Today, we have a reliable manufacturing setup in place, better control of our process, and a business that’s finally positioned to scale. Now, instead of solving for survival, we can focus on what we do best: growing sales and building the brand

As you know, we’re big fans of Pnuff. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
P-Nuff Crunch is a science-driven snack brand built around one simple idea: real nutrition should actually work — and still taste good.

We specialize in high-protein, plant-based snacks made from simple, whole-food ingredients like peanuts and beans. Our products are baked, not fried, low in sugar, and designed to deliver meaningful protein without relying on highly processed fillers. Everything we make starts with food science, not trends or marketing claims.

What sets us apart is that we don’t cut corners to scale. Many brands start with good intentions and compromise as they grow. We’ve taken the opposite approach — investing heavily in manufacturing, process control, and formulation so we can scale without sacrificing nutrition or quality. That decision slowed growth early on, but it’s what allows us to build a brand with staying power.

Brand-wise, I’m most proud that P-Nuff Crunch has earned trust. We’re a brand created by a food scientist, not a marketing team, and that credibility shows in the product and the community we’ve built. From professional athletes to everyday consumers, people choose P-Nuff because it delivers on what it promises.

What I want readers to know is that P-Nuff isn’t just a snack — it’s proof that better-for-you food can be honest, functional, and scalable.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
I believe the most important quality has been being relentless and refusing to give up.

I’ve learned that I don’t have to know everything to keep moving forward. Progress comes from taking the next step, learning along the way, and not letting setbacks convince me that the journey isn’t worth it. Challenges are part of the process, not a signal to stop.

Just as important, I rely heavily on faith. I have faith in God and trust that He guides every decision I make, even when the path isn’t clear. Believing that the outcome will ultimately be what’s best for me and the business gives me confidence and peace during uncertain moments.

That combination — persistence, humility, and faith — allows me to keep going regardless of setbacks. It turns obstacles into lessons and uncertainty into forward momentum.
