Inspiring Conversations with Mark Spratley of Starting Five & CreatorSpace LA

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mark Spratley.

Hi Mark, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I came up in the music world helping artists build real audiences and momentum online before “digital strategy” was even a thing. That turned into me running campaigns, breaking records, throwing shows, and building relationships with talent, brands, and platforms. Over time, I expanded beyond music into marketing, tech, sports, events, and distribution, which led to the creation of Starting Five, my agency and label, and then Creator Space LA, a 7,000+ square foot creative compound in Santa Monica.

Today I work across music, public relations, creator economy, sports, brand strategy, immersive content (XR, volumetric capture), and product development. I’ve been focused on building a real ecosystem, not just one off projects, where artists, founders, creators, and brands can plug in and scale. My path hasn’t been traditional, but that’s the point, I built my career by being early, executing, and proving results.

What got me to where I am today? My ear, my work ethic, my creative marketing and strategy. But most importantly, the will to never just give up, through all the wins and lessons. I’m still here grinding, just more built than ever.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Not at all, nothing about this has been smooth. I built everything independently, without a big machine behind me, so I had to learn how to get results with no budget, no co-signs, and no roadmap. Early on, I was figuring out how to break artists, throw events, manage campaigns, negotiate deals, and scale brands all at the same time. I’ve had immediate success in the industry, but I’ve also dealt with all the BS and more. From talent that quit right before they took off, changing algorithms, cash flow, and the constant pressure of figuring things out and staying ahead of the game.

But those challenges forced me to get resourceful, build real relationships, and create systems instead of shortcuts. The obstacles are honestly what shaped my resilience and my approach today.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Starting Five & CreatorSpace LA?
Starting Five and Creator Space LA operate as two connected pillars of the same ecosystem. Starting Five is a next-generation label, agency, and brand accelerator that builds artists, products, talent, and companies through marketing, strategy, PR, distribution, and IP development. We work at the intersection of music, sports, tech, creator economy, and culture, helping talent and brands scale far beyond traditional industry structures.

Creator Space LA is our physical innovation and content hub, a 7,000+ sq. ft. creative compound in Santa Monica equipped for events, podcasts, volumetric capture, XR/VR production, streaming, merch production, and brand activations. It’s built as a modern creative infrastructure: a place where artists, creators, athletes, founders, and brands can build, produce, collaborate, and launch ideas under one roof.

What sets us apart is that we don’t just offer services, we offer infrastructure and outcomes. We’re known for being early, being resourceful, and being effective: whether it’s breaking artists, launching brands, building distribution systems, or producing immersive content. We add value instead of taking it, expanding what’s possible for our clients and partners.

Brand-wise, I’m most proud of the ecosystem we’re building. Starting Five and Creator Space LA are designed to empower artists, creators, and companies through ownership, innovation, and execution. We want readers to know that our world is for builders: if you’re talented, if you’re ambitious, if you’re building something real, we give you the platform, support, tools, and strategy to take it further.

How do you think about luck?
Luck comes and goes. The good luck keeps you moving forward, but the bad luck is what builds you. I look at setbacks as lessons, not losses. Every hiccup in my life or business made me stronger, more resourceful, and more intentional.
