Inspiring Conversations with Tracy Wilcox of Diamondback Massage Therapy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tracy Wilcox.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Good Morning,
My name is Tracy L. Wilcox. Born and raised in Newark, NJ, I struggled with finding my place in life. When I finally made the choice to live, I changed my ways. I started modeling and singing. I was engaged to the late Steven Washington of the famed groups Slave and Aurra. As I was about to release my single, Gotta Make It Better, in 1994, I became pregnant, so that was the end of that. We have two daughters together.
After our separation, I began waitressing in a country club. I did this for 16 years. At that time, I knew I didn’t feel complete, so I tried film and landed as an extra on set with Vin Diesel. I thought this was finally it, and one day I was standing outside of the country club, looked up to the sky, and said, “I know, God, that this can’t be it. There is something greater for me to do.” I could just feel it. It was a feeling that I couldn’t describe. Then, just as life would happen again, I was struck by an 18-wheeler truck.
This was a major life change for me. I didn’t see it then, but as I look back on my life, I see it now. After so many challenges that I faced within my life, I always knew there was one thing that I was missing. One day, a friend said their neck was hurting, so I started to squeeze it, and they said, “You have good hands. Have you ever thought of a career in massage therapy?” WHAT? No! But that day it stayed on my mind, so I looked it up, and it clicked that I could help people. The feeling was like a light turned on, and I became warm. It stayed on my mind, and I decided to try for the 10th time.
After a long struggle with obtaining my GED, in 2011 I finally did it. I made it clear that my transformation was about to begin, and giving birth to the name Diamondback is a whole other story. But there is so much to tell. I would love to be considered for this interview because I know I’m going to have an impact on someone’s life.
Thank you for your consideration.
Tracy

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
One of the greatest challenges I have faced as a business owner has been learning how to navigate everything that comes with building a business from the ground up. Complying with ever-changing town ordinances and regulations has often been a complicated process, and securing the funding needed to sustain my business and provide for potential employees.
Another challenge has been marketing and networking. As a small business owner, getting my name out into the community and building meaningful relationships with other professionals has taken continuous effort. Finding people who truly share my vision is one of the most important things to me.
At Diamondback Massage Therapy, we are not simply a place for relaxation. Our mission is healing. Finding like-minded professionals who believe in that mission and can deliver the same compassionate, healing experience to every client has been one of my biggest struggles. Alongside this is building a team that shares my values, work ethic, and passion for helping others.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Diamondback Massage Therapy?
I started Diamondback Massage Therapy in 2014, initially operating out of my home. Before opening my own practice, I worked for several massage therapy businesses and quickly realized that many franchise settings weren’t designed with the client’s best interests at heart. Too often, the focus was on volume and time rather than genuine healing and individual care.
I knew I had been given a gift, but I also knew I couldn’t fully use that gift in an environment where I wasn’t free to treat people the way I believed they needed. That desire became the foundation of Diamondback Massage Therapy. I didn’t start this business simply to own a massage practice, I started it because I believed people deserved a place where they can begin to heal mental stress, unresolved trauma, or even a person’s spiritual well-being. I believe the body remembers what the mind tries to forget, and my goal is to help people begin releasing those burdens in a safe and compassionate environment. Every session is guided by my own life experiences, and while pain often shows itself in the body, I’ve learned that it doesn’t always begin there. Sometimes it is rooted in emotional wounds.
If there is one thing I want readers to know about Diamondback Massage Therapy, it is this: when I lay my hands on someone, I am laying my heart on them as well. My intention is never just to relieve pain for an hour. It is to help restore hope, bring peace, and begin mending for those who need it. Whether that healing is physical, emotional, mental, or spiritual, I want every client to leave knowing they were seen, heard, valued, and cared for. That is the legacy I hope for my business.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
I like that the city has a lot of small businesses that survived after the Covid pandemic and my dislike about the city is the lack of parking.
