Today we’d like to introduce you to Tyneida Alanos.
Hi Tyneida, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Urban Travel Experience was born from both my personal story and a deep desire to change what access looks like for our children.
I was raised by a single mother, and growing up I saw firsthand how hard she worked to give me stability, love, and opportunity—even when resources were limited. Watching her navigate life with strength and sacrifice shaped who I am. It taught me resilience, compassion, and the importance of creating pathways where none seem to exist.
As a child, I also understood how limiting your environment can feel when you don’t see beyond what’s around you. I knew early on that exposure changes everything. Travel, culture, and new experiences don’t just show you the world—they show you yourself in a bigger way. That belief stayed with me, and over time it became a calling.
UTE started as a simple idea: What if kids who may never get on a plane could still experience the world? I began creating small cultural experiences for children in my community—introducing them to different foods, traditions, and stories from around the globe. What started as a passion project quickly turned into something much bigger. The reactions from the kids—their curiosity, their confidence, the way their eyes lit up—told me this was more than an activity. It was purpose.
The journey hasn’t been easy. I’ve built UTE with heart, faith, and persistence—often without funding, without a blueprint, and sometimes without knowing how the next step would happen. But every obstacle only strengthened my commitment. I learned how to form partnerships, apply for grants, organize programs, and advocate for our youth one relationship and one experience at a time.
Today, Urban Travel Experience is a growing nonprofit that partners with schools, local businesses, and community organizations to bring immersive, cultural learning to children who deserve more access and opportunity. We’ve hosted field trips, food-based cultural journeys, and enrichment experiences that allow kids to explore the world safely and joyfully.
UTE is still in its early chapters, but I’m proud of how far we’ve come. This work is personal to me because I know what it feels like to need someone to open a door and say, “There is more out there for you.”
UTE is that door.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s been a beautiful journey — but not a smooth one. While we’ve celebrated every small victory, from watching a classroom of children light up with curiosity to seeing local restaurants open their doors to our groups, getting to those moments has required grit, creativity, and relentless hustle.
One of our biggest and most consistent challenges has been funding. Supporting program costs, transportation, and our long-term dream of a permanent home for Urban Travel Experience has meant writing grants, hosting grassroots fundraisers, and building partnerships one conversation at a time. Closely tied to funding is space. Finding affordable, safe venues for hands-on cultural and food-based experiences takes time, negotiation, and trust.
Transportation is another hurdle — coordinating buses or travel for 10 to 50 children adds layers of logistics and expense. We’ve also faced the reality of limited staff and fluctuating volunteers, all while many of us balance full-time jobs, families, and community responsibilities.
There’s also the behind-the-scenes work: navigating permits, school schedules, and institutional processes that don’t always move quickly. And personally, there have been sacrifices — stepping away from comfort, stability, and sometimes income — in order to keep the mission alive.
Still, every obstacle has strengthened us. Each challenge has taught us how to adapt, collaborate, and stay rooted in purpose. Funding a permanent UTE home hasn’t been easy, but we continue to manage, move forward, and believe. With every barrier we pass, our vision becomes clearer and closer.
We don’t just endure the hard parts — we grow because of them. And every step brings us nearer to a future where children can consistently explore the world through culture, food, and experience under one UTE roof.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Urban Travel Experience (UTE) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to exposing children and families to the world beyond their neighborhoods—without needing a passport. We use culture, food, travel, and hands-on experiences as tools to inspire curiosity, confidence, and global awareness in young people, especially those from under-resourced communities.
At UTE, we specialize in experiential learning. Instead of teaching culture from a textbook, we bring it to life. Our
programs include cultural field trips, international-themed food experiences, workshops, and community events where children get to explore different countries through cuisine, music, language, traditions, and storytelling. One of our signature experiences is taking students on “travel through food” journeys—like our Mexico experience with local restaurants—where kids learn history, geography, and culture in a way that’s fun, engaging, and memorable.
What sets UTE apart is that we don’t just educate—we immerse. We create safe, joyful spaces where children feel seen, inspired, and empowered to dream bigger than their current surroundings. Many of the children we serve have never traveled outside their city, so we bring the world to them and show them that their possibilities are limitless.
Brand-wise, what I’m most proud of is our heart. UTE is rooted in authenticity, community, and purpose. We are not just running programs—we’re building confidence, expanding mindsets, and planting seeds for future leaders, travelers, and change-makers. Everything we do is driven by love for our youth and belief in their potential.
What I want readers to know is that Urban Travel Experience is more than a nonprofit—it’s a movement. We are redefining what access to culture and education looks like. Through our partnerships with schools, local businesses, and community leaders, we are creating meaningful experiences that stick with children long after the day ends.
UTE exists to remind every child: Your world is bigger than your block—and you belong in it.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
For a long time, I didn’t see myself as a “risk-taker” in the traditional sense. I’m naturally very private and reserved, so for me, risk doesn’t look like jumping without a plan — it looks like stepping out from behind the scenes and allowing myself to be seen.
Starting Urban Travel Experience was a huge personal risk. It meant exposing my creativity, my ideas, and my heart to the world in a way I never had before. I had to put my name, my story, and my vision out there — and that’s not easy when you’re someone who’s used to moving quietly. There’s a vulnerability that comes with saying, “This is what I believe in,” and inviting others to judge, support, or even doubt it.
But I’ve learned that meaningful impact requires meaningful risk. I don’t take risks recklessly — I take them intentionally. I think about risk as alignment: if something aligns with my purpose and the people I’m meant to serve, then it’s a risk worth taking, even if it scares me. Growth doesn’t happen in comfort, and Urban Travel Experience only exists because I chose to step outside my comfort zone and trust myself.
So while I may still be a private person at heart, I’ve embraced the idea that courage isn’t about being fearless — it’s about being willing. Willing to be seen. Willing to try. Willing to grow. And for me, that’s what risk really is.
