Life & Work with Lori Powell of New Jersey

Today we’d like to introduce you to Lori Powell.

Lori, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
Name of Business: Snoopy’s Safe and Sound

Been in business: 20 yrs

I started as an elementary school teacher and later became a licensed home childcare provider. During the summer, I had a passion for animals, so I decided to try pet sitting and dog walking during the summer and on weekends for some extra income. I fell in love with the job, and it quickly grew, so I decided to turn it into a full-time business. Snoopy was our first family dog, a black Labrador Retriever, and I named the business after her. Savannah was our next beautiful yellow lab who passed away last year, and now we have a one-year-old mixed breed named Summer, along with three cats: Petunia, Oliver, and Ama.

The services we offer include:

Dog walking, either occasionally or on a regular schedule

Cat sitting and care for other small pets
E
Pet sitting visits to your home, offering 3 or 4 daily 30-minute visits when you’re on vacation

After each visit, we’ll text you with an update, so you can rest easy knowing your pet is in safe and loving hands.

When hiring a pet sitter, I recommend checking if they have pet sitters insurance. Also, pay close attention to how they interact with your dog or cat. An experienced walker/sitter should seem comfortable and confident with your animal. A pet professional should require a meet and greet with you and your pet, asking lots of questions about your dog’s temperament both at home and during walks. You should ask for references and check them out. Too many people are hobbyists when it comes to pet sitting, and you need to know you’re dealing with a professional who will take the job of caring for your pet very seriously. You should ask them to update you daily. Show them the proper way to put on your dog’s harness to ensure it’s snug and secure.

A misconception people may have when hiring a pet sitter is that all the person needs to be is an animal lover. Although important, that is not enough. The person needs to be responsible, trustworthy, and have at least a basic knowledge of dog/cat behavior, so they can anticipate or prevent a problem from occurring.

I enjoy living in Somerville because it’s a perfect mixture of Suburban lifestyle, with a splash of an urban feel too. I love the diversity. And of course, I love the pet friendly attitude of most people and places.

Best way to reach me ? Texting is the best way, and calling is the second best. Takes me a bit longer to respond to emails because I’m on the road all day.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Pretty smooth road , it grew steadily each year . Was hard when Covid hit , wasn’t sure we were going to make it , but held onto a few clients during quarantine, and afterwards the business grew even bigger because so many families got pets during quarantine.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I used to be an elementary school teacher so I think that helped me relate well to my clients . I am always very thorough when I update them about their pets , make sure to include positive feedback, etc

I also enjoy creating ads and videos of the pets , having fun and being creative with my advertisements .

What matters most to you? Why?
It matters most to me that my clients see that my staff and I truly care about the wellbeing of their pet . We will go above and beyond to make sure their pets are safe and feel loved while they are in our care.
