Meet Alicia Owens of Hackensack NJ

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alicia Owens.

Hi Alicia, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am retired educator with over 30 years of experience, specializing in special education. Throughout my career, I witnessed the critical need for more compassionate-centered support systems for individuals with disabilities and their families. This realization inspired me to create Colors In Motion, an initiative dedicated to fostering meaningful collaboration among educators, families, and individuals of all ages to seniors-living with disabilities. My goal has always been to build inclusive spaces where everyone feels seen, supported, and empowered.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a completely smooth road. One of the biggest challenges has been building awareness and trust within the community, especially when introducing a new concept centered on culturally responsive and inclusive support. Securing resources and funding has also been an ongoing obstacle, as meaningful programs require both financial support and community buy in. Additionally, navigating systems that are not always designed with individual with disabilities and their families in mind can be frustrating. However, each challenge has reinforced my commitment to this work. It has pushed me to be more creative, persistent, and collaborative, ultimately strengthening both my vision and the impact of Colors In Motion.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I continue to stay connected to the classroom as a substitute teacher in NYC and New Jersey. My work extends beyond the school setting through my initiative, Colors In Motion, where I focus on supporting youth programs, weekly events, local libraries, churches, advocate for families and creating social time for seniors. Always willing to lend a helping hand.

I specialize in creating inclusive, culturally responsive environments and building strong partnerships between educators, families, and the community. I am known for my compassion, patience, and ability to connect with students of all abilities, ensuring they feel supported and valued.

What I am most proud of is my continued dedication to the field of education, even after retirement, and my ability to turn my experience into meaningful support for others. What sets me apart is my commitment to meeting people where they are and fostering collaboration that leads to lasting impact.

What makes you happy?
Knowing that I am making a difference in the lives of others. Whether I’m in the classroom as a substitute teacher or working through my organization, Colors In Motion, seeing individuals with disabilities feel supported, understood, and empowered brings me true joy.

I also find happiness in building connections by bringing families, educators, and communities together in a way that creates lasting impact. For me, happiness comes from purpose, and being able to use my experience to uplift others and create inclusive spaces is what truly fulfills me.
