Today we’d like to introduce you to Claudia Shaughnessy.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
parkrun is a free, community event where you can walk, jog, run, volunteer or spectate. parkrun is 5k and takes place every Saturday morning.
parkrun is positive, welcoming and inclusive, there is no time limit and no one finishes last. Everyone is welcome to come along.
It was started in the UK 20 years ago.
Our parkrun was started in May 2024 at Veterans Park, and we recently held our 100th parkrun. We have regular runners, walkers, and volunteers. Some of them go to a local cafe afterwards. We welcome “parkrun tourists” who visit from other states and countries.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The original run director stepped back after a year, and my daughter and I have been sharing the responsiblity since then.
parkrun is year round, rain or shine, we had to cancel some Saturdays due to snow and ice, or lack of volunteers in the cold.
A bridge in the park was closed for a while, causing us to come up with an alternat course of the same length and a different starting point.
What’s next?
We have room to grow and would love to welcome more members of the community to come out and join us. It would be great if local running groups would use us as their Saturday morning run.
We would also love to expand our volunteer base.
