Today we’d like to introduce you to Hollie Meyer.
Hi Hollie, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I was hired in October 2021, when the organization decided to take a chance on me, despite my lack of experience in the nonprofit sector and my previous role as an Executive Director. What began as a leap of faith quickly became a commitment to learning, growth, and service; through hands-on experience, I strengthened programs, built community partnerships, and introduced new initiatives—including the creation of a Junior Board—to develop youth leadership and ensure a strong pipeline for the organization’s future.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth road. Stepping into nonprofit leadership without prior experience meant learning everything in real time—governance, compliance, fundraising, and program management—often while actively leading the organization. I faced challenges building systems from scratch, earning trust, securing funding, and balancing limited resources with growing community needs. Despite these obstacles, each challenge strengthened my leadership, deepened my commitment to the mission, and pushed me to create sustainable programs, including building new leadership pathways like the Junior Board.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My work centers on youth development, community engagement, and building sustainable nonprofit programs that respond to real, local needs. I specialize in creating structure where it didn’t previously exist—developing programs, partnerships, and leadership pathways that support both young people and the organization as a whole. I am known for leading with authenticity, persistence, and a hands-on approach, often building initiatives from the ground up.
I am most proud of growing into the role of Executive Director while expanding the organization’s impact, including launching the Junior Board to cultivate youth leadership and create a long-term pipeline for governance and civic engagement. What sets me apart is my lived experience, willingness to learn in real time, and ability to turn challenges into opportunities—bringing fresh perspective, resilience, and community-driven leadership to the nonprofit sector.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson I’ve learned is that effective leadership is built on humility, resilience, and a willingness to learn. You don’t have to have all the answers on day one, but you do have to show up consistently, listen to your community, and keep moving forward—especially when the work is difficult.
