Meet Julius Sanchez of Woodbridge

Today we’d like to introduce you to Julius Sanchez.

Hi Julius , we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
As a kid, growing up I was surrounded by media and art without really realizing it as far as i can remember. Wether it was watching cartoons, music videos, movies, even hanging around my cousins both same as my age or older. I was constantly exposed to stuff that peaked my interests. I can recall a time when i was probably 5 years old watching one of my relatives draw one of the Dragon Ball Z characters in real time. Being 5 years old, Im looking to him as if he was performing some magic because he was drawing the character as the show would be rolling on the T.V. and it was spot on too. Ever since then, it was something i would pick up during the whole duration of my youth up into high school. Id draw on the side of notebook in between the margins. I would doodle here and there outside of school however most of the time i was bored or done with my work early in school. I started taking it serious when i took a full year AP art class my senior year in addition to taking an elective photography class after.

Between those two interests, I got really interested with photography in the beginning of 2014-15′. Thats where i can say i really started pursuing anything creative. My view on art class was this was a class i didn’t mind doing the work without dreading the time of a 95 min period class at 7am you know? My high school, we didn’t have 8 class periods. We had four 95 minute “blocks” .So Imagine doing the work of your least favorite subject like calculus or something in the morning. Photography for me is what made me want to take a creative path seriously so much so that i went to major in Commercial Photography then moving to taking a chance on freelance work.

A little time before the 2019 pandemic i started picking up the effort to draw after. When the pandemic came around that was a no better window of time to occupy since things were was essentially was suspended for a little while. I stuck with drawing these two cartoon characters as a way for me to keep up with the act drawing and eventually taking it more serious cause it was my way learning the mundane practical fundamentals I learned in AP using basic shapes and all that stuff to refine what i think i see putting anything down if that makes sense. Since then i got into painting with acrylics and thats been what ive stuck to since then.

Like anyone doing anything they are proud of, i was pretty interested in what i was making so of course, i wanted to share what i was able to make for myself on to social media. I easily stayed consistent with it because i was seeing myself progress faster so each article of work was getting through that ugly stage when you first start anything or pick anything back up after a while.
Fortunately for the times too , it was cool to see with a humble amount of people enjoy the work i was making . All of that was pretty good indication to keep experimenting with the consistency. Ever since then i kept myself on the path of building more of the characters i use in all of my works.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Definitely has not been a smooth road. Of course there was struggles too, that comes with every territory in any road you decide to take up. As corny as it sounds; It’s inevitable that there will be setbacks, detours, inconveniences. If you still want to do something you’ll show up for it, even if you take time off for however long. Whatever the reason is, if you want to do it, you’ll do it. There were times where i was not creating as much for a while because i had to put my focus on other things and other times, i was almost anytime i got the chance. Ultimately i know i wanted to do something creative so as long as i could show up for myself in any which way i can for the day, Let alone, this is something that i want to do for myself and i have enough delusion and drive to keep pushing onwards on this path of being a creative. I don’t see myself living a life i regret so why not live a life that i am able to look back on see how much i contributed doing something that fits me.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My work are these cartoon characters i draw in almost everything i do. They are of the devil and angel of course but they are how i use to depict duality in each of my pieces. While some hold message, most of which i simply enjoy experimenting, building more , refining more. Anytime you see these little guys, thats what is what i am known for. Im proud of being able to this consistent for this long honestly. I think what sets me apart is that i am able to stay in that mindset where Im not concerning myself with making what i think people would like and more so making from a place where simply as put, Im in constant work in progress with it. That opens up space to keep it alive and ambitious i believe.

What sets me apart if i had to say is that its all original in my way of interpretation and execution. Im not the only person ever in use angel and bad character. I think the style of that is what makes it stand out as well as the consistency. Let alone this is something i want to do and i don’t about anything else.

What were you like growing up?
I grew up interesting in pop culture media, video games. being a kid, you know. Go outside, ride your bike, get into trouble with your friends. Normal living. I spent time being put onto new shows , games, music. I think at that time everything was just coming out and being invested in all of it and soaking up whatever i can learn, explore interest in. Its hard to say one particular thing.

Personality wise growing up, i mainly would spend time equally being alone and occupying myself with my interest like drawing , watching a new series or something. Also be adaptable and being social, In social settings, I didn’t grow up shy or anything. If you didnt know me, i would be to myself and if you did we can talk about anything, it doesnt matter who you are or what you liked.
