Meet Rachael Mecholsky Pelikan of RMP Counseling & Creative Healing

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachael Mecholsky Pelikan.

Hi Rachael , we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I initially went to Graduate school for Art Therapy & Mental Health counseling after seeing how much art making benefited my own healing process. Throughout that time, as well as after graduation, I worked in several different settings including a children and adolescent psychiatric hospital, a non-profit art studio, a trauma center private practice, an inpatient substance abuse treatment center, and a group private practice. After all of those settings, I finally opened up my own private practice to curate a space for children, adolescents, and adults to feel comfortable, explore art work, and engage in their own healing.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Being a therapist can be difficult at times, especially depending on the setting in which one is working. It’s difficult to hold space for others when you are struggling yourself. Working in counseling really challenged me to focus on addressing my own wounds and engage in my own healing processes in order to be there fully for my clients.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?

Therapist & Art Therapist | Addictions Counselor | Eating Disorder Specialist

I work with children (4+), teens, young adults, and adults, with specialized focus in eating disorders/disordered eating, trauma recovery, anxiety, and identity exploration. Whether you’re feeling overwhelmed, stuck, or unsure where to begin, my goal is to help you feel understood and confident in your ability to heal and grow.

My style is authentic, warm, and direct once trust is established. I bring humor, realness, and a collaborative spirit into therapy — clients often share that they feel comfortable, supported, and “able to be themselves” with me. I value bringing in families when working with younger clients, because healing often strengthens everyone involved.

I use EMDR, trauma-informed approaches, creative art-based therapy, and addiction certified treatment. Treatment is always individualized — we work together to find what best fits your needs, strengths, and goals.

My passion for this work comes not just from training, but also lived experience. Navigating my own journey with anxiety, disordered eating, and growing up in a blended family shaped the way I show up: with empathy, openness, and deep respect for every client’s path. I believe every person has the capacity to heal — and no one should have to do it alone.

I bring my two dogs into the office often. They are registered ESA’s and provide a point of comfort for most of my clients. Clients who are just starting out usually love animals and love the buffer; Clients I have seen over the years have grown a relationship and attachment to my dogs. Animals can bring a lot into the therapy office in ways people cannot at times.

I am most proud of my eclectic style of therapy work. I do a little bit of everything and love working with a variety of clients. If I don’t know something, I feel obligated to learn more to be able to provide the care the clients’ deserve. I am proud of myself for pursuing my Certified Eating Disorder Specialist Certification (CEDS) through IAEDP (International Association of Eating Disorders Professionals Foundation) due to my desire to learn more about eating disorders and serving that population. That specific certification took 2+ years of consultation and courses, as well as taking an exam on not only the ways to approach eating disorder clients from a therapeutic standpoint, but a medical and dietetic standpoint as well.

How do you think about happiness?
What makes me happy is seeing people’s hard work pay off. It’s the best part of my job when someone comes in and is excited to share their progress.

I’m an animal lover and proud dog-mom — I also volunteer regularly at a local animal shelter. If there’s a pup nearby, I’m probably talking to it.

I love to travel. I’ve been lucky enough to travel to over 20 countries, and I love learning about different cultures and ways of living.

Humor is one of my favorite tools in therapy — expect gentle sarcasm, dry jokes, and the occasional laugh in the middle of hard work.
