Today we’d like to introduce you to Samantha Snyder.
Hi Samantha, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’ve been in the hair industry for several years, but my path to opening my own space wasn’t a straight line. Like a lot of barbers and stylist, I spent years working in different environments, learning not just the craft, but also what makes a barber truly valuable to their community. Early on I realized the haircut itself is only part of it. Consistency, professionalism, and relationships are what really keep people comfortable and confidently coming back to the chair.
Over time I knew I wanted to build something of my own where I could create that kind of environment for clients. That’s what led me to Grit ‘n Gloss in East Hanover. The idea behind the name was simple: “grit” represents the classic barbering side of what we do – clean fades, line ups and precision cuts. While “gloss” represents the polished, detail-oriented finish every client deserves when they leave the chair.
Today I’m focused on continuing to grow my clientele throughout East Hanover and Morris County while staying true to what I believe a barber should be: someone people can rely on, someone who takes pride in their work, and someone who contributes to the community they serve.
One belief that guides a lot of what I do is simple: to have a village, you have to be a villager. I try to carry that mindset into how I run my business and how I show up for the people who sit in my chair.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely hasn’t been a completely smooth road. Like many people in the service industry, there are ups and downs that come with building a clientele and running a business at the same time. One of the biggest challenges is balancing the craft with the business side of things. As a barber, you’re focused on your work and your clients, but when you open your own space, you also become responsible for marketing, scheduling, finances, and everything that comes with running a business.
Another challenging thing is building consistency. When you’re establishing yourself in a new space, it takes time for people to discover you, trust you, and become regular clients. That process can take patience and persistence.
At the same time, those challenges are what also make the journey rewarding. Every new client who feels comfortable sitting in my chair, every returning client who trusts the skill and consistency I provide, and every full day behind the chair feels like a step forward. It’s all part of building something long-term.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Grit ‘n Gloss?
My business is Grit ‘n Gloss, a barber studio based in East Hanover, New Jersey. I created the space to focus on high-quality barbering while also building an environment where clients feel comfortable and taken care of.
At the core, Grit ‘n Gloss is about consistency, attention to detail, and building real relationships with clients. I specialize in clean fades, classic cuts, beard work, straight razor shaves, and precision grooming. My goal is for every client to leave looking sharp and feeling confident.
What really sets the business apart for me it the experience and mindset behind it. I’ve always believed that barbering is about more than just the haircut. It’s about reliability, professionalism, and creating a place where people know they’ll be treated well every time they sit in the chair.
Opening my own studio gave me the opportunity to build that from the ground up. I’m most proud of the community that’s forming around the business and the trust clients place in me to take care of their barbering needs consistently.
Again, the belief at the very core of my business is: to have a village, you have to be a villager. I try to bring that mindset into my work and into the way I show up for each and every client, for my community, and even every aspiring barber I’ve met and guided along my journey in the industry.
Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I enjoy learning through books and podcasts, especially those focused on discipline, mindset, and entrepreneurship. One book that really stuck with me is Atomic Habits by James Clear. The idea that small, consistent improvements over time can lead to meaningful results really resonates with me, especially in a craft like barbering where consistency and attention to detail matter every day.
Another book I enjoyed is Make Your Bed by Admiral William H. McRaven. It’s a simple but powerful reminder that discipline and pride in small daily actions can shape bigger outcomes.
For podcasts, I enjoy listening to shows like How I Built This, which highlights the stories behind entrepreneurs and the businesses they’ve built, and The Diary of a CEO, which features honest conversations about leadership, personal growth, and navigating challenges in business and life.
Beyond books and podcasts, I also learn a lot from the people around me. Conversations with other entrepreneurs, barbers, and business owners have been incredibly valuable. Hearing about their experiences, lessons, and perspectives have helped shape the way I approach both my craft and running my own business.
