Today we’d like to introduce you to Alan Locher.
Hi Alan , can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I launched The Locher Room in the early weeks of the COVID-19 pandemic after being laid off from my job in New York City’s tourism industry. Having spent most of my career in public relations across film, television, and more than a decade in daytime TV, I reached out to friends from the soap world to host casual, live conversations that could reconnect fans during lockdown.
What began as a simple way to create connection quickly grew into a weekly YouTube talk show. To date, I’ve hosted more than 580 episodes and welcomed over 1,000 guests — from actors across film, primetime and daytime television to activists and community voices. What started during a moment of uncertainty has become an ongoing platform centered on storytelling, nostalgia and creating community.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t been a smooth road and it’s been far more work than I ever could have imagined. From day one, I’ve done everything myself: booking guests, researching, writing, producing, promoting the show, and building the community one layer at a time. My mindset has always been simple: if you show up consistently and do the work with care, people will find you (“if you build it, they will come.”)
The biggest challenges have been learning the platform, figuring out how to grow an audience, and constantly adapting as things change. I’m still learning every day. While the show has grown beyond anything I expected, one ongoing challenge is finding sustainable ways to support the work long-term. Still, I believe deeply in what I’m building, and I’m committed to continuing to grow and evolve it.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
At its core, my work has always been about storytelling and connection. I’m best known as the creator and host of The Locher Room, but my career spans more than three decades across film, television, tourism, sales, and entrepreneurship.
I started out as a Page at ABC, an experience that truly changed the course of my life. Working on Live with Regis and Kathie Lee led to my first full-time job as a Production Coordinator right out of college, and from there I found myself immersed in the entertainment world. I spent eight years at The Walt Disney Studios working in film publicity on more than 200 releases, then moved to the agency side at Rubenstein Public Relations before leading publicity for As the World Turns and Guiding Light at Procter & Gamble Productions — shows I grew up watching, which made that chapter a full-circle moment.
In more recent years, I’ve led teams across marketing, sales, and operations at On Location Tours, served as VP of Sales for Truescope, and now work as Director of Operations for Fotostori. What I’m most proud of is how all of those experiences came together in The Locher Room. It’s something I built myself, episode by episode, and it’s grown into a community rooted in nostalgia, trust, and shared history. What sets it apart — and what matters most to me — is creating a space where people feel comfortable slowing down and telling their stories honestly.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
My husband and I moved back to New Jersey and settled in Scotch Plains, where we were lucky enough to buy the house he grew up in from his dad. We are so blessed with some of the best neighbors you could ask for, and I love the overall vibe — the sense of community, the local scene, and the energy in both Scotch Plains and nearby Westfield.
If I had to name a downside, it would be my ongoing love-hate relationship with NJ Transit. The convenience of being close to New York City is one of the biggest perks of living here, but public transportation can be unpredictable at times. It’s a small trade-off, though, for everything else this area offers.
