Today we’d like to introduce you to Courtney Collins.
Hi Courtney, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started my hair journey in 2011. I graduated cosmetology and found a job in a high end salon as an assistant. I would go back and forth with being on “floor” and working behind the desk. I eventually became assistant to the owner of the salon which then led me to earning my own chair. I stayed at this salon for 9 years and learned many different aspects of the industry from seasoned stylists as well as my peers. After the salon moved I decided I needed a change of pace and although it was hard to say goodbye, I ended up at a smaller boutique salon. The vibe was completely different in a good way and I stayed there for 3 years. I also learned from the girls there. More so social media which is so important in this career. Different coloring techniques. It was a great change of pace. I ended up in my own suite in 2023 so I could be closer to home. I had two little kids and wanted to be closer to them when I was working. I also wanted to get out of my comfort zone and try something on my own. I had built my following, my husband was the one who really pushed me to take a risk and create something that was mine and I have been here ever since. I just celebrated 3 years and have gained clients and also have most of my clients who have followed me throughout the years. It’s been such a journey and I am still learning so much everyday. Making mistakes and trying new things both hair and business
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I don’t think any transition is 100% smooth. My struggles were making myself believe I was good enough to go out there on my own and hoping my clients would be willing to follow me for the second time. There is a comfort in walking into a salon and having your girls there but there was a sense of “wow you did this” walking into my own space.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I would say formal / bridal I am most proud of. It’s something I really have a passion for and continue to educate myself in. I love being a part of a day that completely changes someone’s life forever. I find so much joy in being a part of making someone feel beautiful before they say their “I do’s”. I really wasn’t good at formal styles when I first started and I remember doing an updo on a girl that was part of a wedding party and it just entirely falling apart before she even checked out. I really pushed myself to get better with different tips and tricks from other stylists and al so took many classes
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I think being personable is most important. I really try to remember certain things my clients tell me. I never want them to sit in my chair and think I’m just listening to listen. I truly am so thankful for every single person that comes into my place and trusts me with something as personal as their hair so when they do share stories or details about themselves or something happening in their lives I do my best to remember and ask about whatever they had told me at their next visit
