Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Kochenour.
Hi Jennifer, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I’m a licensed cosmetologist with 30 years of professional experience in the beauty industry. I specialize in bridal makeup artistry and comprehensive, customized makeup lessons. Throughout my career I’ve had the opportunity to work within all areas of the beauty industry from salon and day spa to New York Fashion Week to commercial and print and so much more. I’ve worked in 40 states throughout the U.S. and have extensive experience with people of all ages, races, skin types and more. My passion is rooted in helping all people, especially women, feel beautiful in their own way, celebrating their natural beauty while capturing their unique way of self-expression. As an artist, I believe that you never stop learning and have continued my education throughout my career, including graduating with honors from a prestigious makeup artist academy in Los Angeles, CA in 2002. I have always been a lover of fashion and art history, both have greatly influenced my artistic style.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Oh goodness, no, it has not been a smooth road! However, I am beyond grateful for everything that I have learned from all of my experiences. My struggles have evolved and shifted throughout my career and at this point in life, I certainly don’t expect to be free of any or all challenges. I’ve worked for or with people who have taken advantage or greatly mistreated me in numerous ways. I’ve had to learn how to not take things personally – I think to some degree, this one is a bit impossible. When you put your heart and soul into your craft, it’s quite difficult because it IS personal. These days it’s learning to be more vocal and visible on social media. This one will forever be outside of my comfort zone, to some extent. My heart’s desire and drive has always been about how I can help others through the power of makeup as well as collaborating with others to create something special, it has never about me. But I believe that so much of our development is directly correlated to our experiences and the challenges we overcome. I also believe that all of that experience can be turned into something good one way or another. I’m thankful to have had the opportunity for ALL of it!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a licensed cosmetologist, specializing in bridal makeup artistry and comprehensive, customized makeup lessons. I am known for creating lightweight, yet flawless looking complexions that look skin-like, while enhancing natural beauty for a timeless look that helps women feel like the most elevated version of themselves. I am also know for incorporating fashion and beauty trends into my makeup artistry that always enhances natural beauty and has a quality of timelessness. As an educator, I am known for my extensive knowledge and understanding of makeup, skin and the science of ingredients and more along with my ability to teach others of any skill level from the absolute beginner to fellow professionals.
I am most proud of my unwavering passion for my work, everything I create and most of all, serving others through makeup artistry. I knew when I was a young child that this is what I wanted to do with my life and that has never changed. Over the last 30 years, there has been endless changes, from trends to technology to social media and so much more. Despite all of these endless changes, I have continued to have a deep love for my work and strong desire to continue to grow and learn.
I believe we all have a purpose in life and tend not to think what sets me apart from others. I believe that my journey is about my unique talents and opportunities along the way – no two journeys are ever the same. However, I do realize and am incredibly grateful for a journey that has been so abundant with very unusual experiences, all which have helped shape me as an artist as well as a person.
What do you like and dislike about the city?
One of the things I like best about it is the diversity. Diversity in people, the arts, foods, cultures and more!
As for what I like the least, I really do wish we had a much better public transportation system.
