Today we’d like to introduce you to Kira Simmons.
Hi Kira, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I started this business with a mixer, a vision, and a deep belief that *everyone* deserves a beautiful cake on their special day—no matter their zip code or budget. As a Black woman growing up in a community where luxury often felt out of reach, I saw how meaningful moments were sometimes limited by access. I began baking for family and friends, pouring intention, culture, and love into every cake, and quickly realized this was bigger than baking—it was about service.
What started in my kitchen through word-of-mouth has grown into a purpose-driven brand rooted in community and excellence. I’ve stayed committed to bringing high-quality, luxury-style cakes to those often overlooked by the traditional market, without compromising on design, flavor, or experience. With our first location opening this July, I’m incredibly excited to officially serve the Newark community, neighboring counties, and our loyal New York clients who’ve supported us from the very beginning. This next chapter is about growth, access, and continuing to prove that luxury belongs to everyone.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Absolutely not—it has been far from a smooth road. Finding the right location alone was a major challenge, especially as a small Black woman–owned business trying to secure a space that aligned with our vision *and* our budget. On top of that, navigating multiple contractors, delays, and miscommunication tested my patience and resilience more times than I can count. Inflation added another layer of difficulty, driving up the cost of materials, equipment, and everyday operations while still trying to keep our products accessible to the community we serve.
Each of these obstacles felt like a significant roadblock, but they also strengthened my resolve. I had to learn how to advocate for myself, pivot quickly, and stay grounded in my mission when things didn’t go as planned. Every challenge reinforced why this business exists—to create space, opportunity, and beauty where it’s often denied—and made this upcoming opening even more meaningful.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Before stepping fully into this business, I built a 15-year career in Human Resources, and that experience shapes everything we do. Coming from HR taught me how to truly listen, manage operations, build systems, and most importantly, work with people. It’s helped me create a client experience that’s organized, transparent, and rooted in respect—something that often sets us apart in this industry.
What I’m most proud of is building a brand that truly reflects both excellence and community. Every decision we make is intentional—from the ingredients we choose to the way we show up for our clients. We don’t just sell cakes; we create moments that people will remember for the rest of their lives. Whether it’s a child’s birthday, a wedding, or a milestone that deserves to be celebrated big, we believe those moments should be honored with beauty, quality, and care.
Beyond the cakes, our impact is rooted in people. We hire locally, pour back into the community, and create opportunities where they may not have existed before. Serving underserved communities isn’t an afterthought for us—it’s the foundation. We are proud to challenge the idea that luxury is exclusive or out of reach, and instead redefine it as something warm, accessible, and rooted in culture.
What truly sets us apart is that we lead with intention. Culture, consistency, and care are baked into everything we do—from how we treat our clients to how we run our business behind the scenes. Our mission always comes before the margins, and that commitment shows in the trust we’ve built, the loyalty of our clients, and the growth of a brand that stands for something bigger than cake.
What’s next?
The future feels incredibly exciting for us. Our biggest milestone right now is the opening of our first storefront this July, which is something we’ve worked toward for a long time. Having a physical space allows us to deepen our connection with the community, welcome people in, and create an experience that goes beyond special orders—a place where celebration and joy are part of everyday life.
We’re also looking forward to expanding our product line to include ice cream, milkshakes, natural juices, and thoughtfully crafted vegan options. It’s important to us that our menu reflects inclusivity, not just in who we serve but in what we offer. Too often, dietary needs are treated as an afterthought, especially in underserved communities, and we’re committed to creating vegan desserts that are just as indulgent, beautiful, and satisfying. This next chapter is about growth with purpose—becoming a true neighborhood dessert destination while staying rooted in our mission to make luxury accessible to everyone.
