Inspiring Conversations with Mir Shithil of Helios Physical Therapy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mir Shithil.

Hi Mir, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I always grew up loving science and sports – in high school I specifically fell in love with biology. In undergrad, I loved weightlifting including teaching other people and seeing an immediate joy when they notice the change. So naturally I learned about physical therapy and attended NYU for my doctorate program – at NYU I learned everything from wound-care at Bellevue to working with professional athletes at HSS, and broadway performers at other affiliated clinics. I worked in outpatient clinics and grew into the profession, I slowly started to notice a trend and an overall asymmetry in physical therapy and healthcare in general. This was how insurances dictated care, and reduced reimbursements – this led to PT clinics increasing volume to increase revenue. I saw patients get worse care, sessions being rushed, Therapists being overworked and burned out. I had always wanted to start my own venture, but this was the final sign. I started Helios with the goal that true 1 on 1 physical therapy was not only valuable but necessary for athletes and active adults. A single session at Helios can equate to 5 sessions at a typical corporate clinic (where PTs see up to 3-5 patients an hour). This is because the entire undivided attention of hte therapist is on the patient every second. This means looking at every joint angle, every muscle recruitment, We;ll know if your toes are not properly being used or out of position. The purpose is to treat every *regular* patient like an MVP level all-star athlete. Every patient deserves this level of attention and care. Often we go beyond and treating patients in the clinic, and stay in touch with them video text to make sure programs are being followed, progress is being made, or any issues that come up. We aim to be in the corner of out patients as first line for any injuries or physical therapy related issues.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road, it still is not a smooth road, I continue to learn every day. We are small practice, right now its just me, and I am looking for another therapist to hire – so currently that a bit f a struggle – finding the right fit has been hard. Expanding the clinic space inside of the gym we are in (evolvefitness studio) was bit of a challenge but I was able to work with the owner to create another private treatment room. Insurance continues to be a issue…Since I am out of network and a small practice – large insurance companies take advantage of this and will do many things to make it inconvient for patients to get treatment here. Include sending them mail to scare them to say “You’re paying more for outof network!” “We dont participate with this practice” – all of this is intentional misinformation. Recently they have also made changes to their reimbursement both in their amount, and how they issue payments all to make things harder for my practice (and many small practices like mine).

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Helios Physical Therapy ?
I have a small Physical Therapy practice called Helios Physical Therapy. (heliospt.com). I specialize in one on one 60 minute physical therapy for athletes and active goal motivated adults. True one on one clinics are far and few especially in the current corporate driven healthcare systems. I am proud of the reputation I have built with my patients, they continue to seek care and all of my growth has been word of mouth, expanding to family members and community friends. At helios we take physical therapy to the next level, we are in your corner the entire time for any rehab, or goal oriented physical health conditions. We have all PT modalities as needed, and participate with all insurances (with out of network benefits). If you are confused about out of network and what it means – we take our time before you start to explain everything so there are no confusions.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Get started yesterday and figure things out as you go. There is not better way to learn and fix things than doing it real time.
