Today we’d like to introduce you to Tanvi Mathew.
Hi Tanvi, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I began working with a grassroots mental health organization when I was in college and that’s where where my commitment to mental health came into play. After a few years I became involved with adolescents and teens in a hospital based setting. Working with these children and families with so many limitations under state guidelines made me realize I needed to think outside the box and create a different platform to help empower people. I had a vision to help individuals to not only understand themselves, but to have a better relationship with the person they are and ultimately have the confidence to become the person they strive to be.
My personal life inter-twines with my professional success and who I am today. I come from a culture where mental health was not considered a priority and instead frowned upon. I recognized as a young child growing up in an often emotionally unstable household that I needed to change the trajectory of my future by breaking generational trauma and barriers.
I walked my own path and knew I wasn’t about fitting in, but more about standing out for myself. I married my high school sweetheart and have an interfaith family. We always communicated and knew our success was going to be determined by “Everything money can’t buy, and everything money can’t take away.” That’s my motto.
After being diagnosed with an autoimmune disease in 2011, I began building my practice in 2013. By 2018, I transitioned full time to my practice and created Emerge. I wanted to be present for my three children and have the availability to drop them off and pick them up from school every day and volunteer for all their school activities. This is how I began creating balance and taking control of my life.
Just like I did for myself, I help people find work-life balance and experience fulfillment daily.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No! Not at all. I come from a blue collar family and from the start, didn’t have the support my friends around me had as a child.
Every step was a struggle. As an adult, I was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease while I was pregnant with my first child. I was sick for a year and after a short period of leave was expected to return to my position at the hospital with zero accommodations and empathy.
While I was pregnant with my third child, I worked three jobs. My full time at the hospital, part time at a group practice, and I began building my own practice.
My husband would take care of the kids after work and wait for me to have dinner. There were some nights where I didn’t get to see my kids before they went to bed.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
At Emerge the counseling process incorporates Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy (REBT). Clients are taught how to connect their thoughts to their behaviors and actions and understand why things are happening around them the way they are. They learn how to better interpret their environment and relationships in a positive manner through restructuring and mindfulness.
Clients don’t just learn to understand the symptoms they’re presenting with. They learn how to explore and dig to the root and determine where the problems are stemming from and how changes need to be made to move forward. Clients not only improve their communication skills, but are able to take accountability for their behaviors.
