Today we’d like to introduce you to Michelle Waters.
Hi Michelle, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I didn’t get into real estate by accident; I built my way here with intention, consistency, and a lot of behind-the-scenes work that most people never see.
Before real estate, I was a 911 dispatcher. It was high-pressure, emotional work that taught me how to stay calm in chaos, communicate clearly, and solve problems quickly, skills I still use every single day with my clients. But I also knew I wanted more flexibility, more control over my future, and the ability to build something of my own.
So I took a leap. I left that career with a dream… and a baby on my hip.
There was no perfect plan or safety net, just a lot of determination and a willingness to figure it out. I was building a business while raising my kids, learning everything from scratch, and showing up every day, whether I felt ready or not.
Being a South Jersey local, I’ve always been deeply connected to my community. I didn’t just want to sell homes. I wanted to become the go-to South Jersey resource for people navigating some of the biggest decisions of their lives. Especially first-time buyers, sellers, and homeowners trying to move into their next chapter without everything falling apart in the process.
Early on, I realized real estate isn’t just about houses—it’s about people, timing, emotions, and strategy. So instead of doing things the “typical” way, I leaned into education, transparency, and connection through my real life. I started showing up online consistently, sharing real experiences, real-life funny moments, breaking down the process, and letting people actually see how I work and who I am as a whole person, not just as an agent.
At the same time, I balance motherhood, business, and personal growth, all of which have forced me to become extremely intentional with my time and systems. That consistency turned into trust. And that trust turned into a business built largely through relationships, referrals, and social media.
Today, I’m known as “Your Favorite Local Realtor,” but more importantly, I’ve built a business that truly supports people through one of the biggest transitions of their lives, with strategy, honesty, and a whole lot of care behind it. My clients all know me really well through my social media presence, and I find that it connects us deeper as a whole.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely has not been a smooth road, and honestly, I don’t think any real success story ever is.
When I first started, I was building a business from scratch while raising a baby (and now three kids), without a steady paycheck or guaranteed income. That alone comes with a lot of pressure. There were months where I didn’t know where my next deal was coming from, moments of doubt, and a lot of learning things the hard way. A lot of agents won’t tell you this, but I didn’t get my first deal for over 6 months!
One of the biggest challenges was consistency, showing up every day, especially on social media, when it felt like no one was watching or responding. It’s easy to question yourself in those moments, but I had to trust that what I was building would eventually pay off.
I also had to learn how to set boundaries, manage my time, and balance being a present mom while growing a business that can easily become all-consuming. Real estate doesn’t have “off hours,” so figuring out how to protect my time while still delivering a high level of service was something I had to grow into.
Another challenge was navigating clients’ emotions and expectations. Buying or selling a home is one of the biggest financial and emotional decisions people make, and there are a lot of moving parts. Learning how to guide people through stressful situations while staying calm, solution-focused, and honest has been a huge part of my growth.
But every challenge forced me to get better. I learned to communicate better, to build stronger systems, and to really step into my role as not just an agent, but an advisor and problem-solver.
Looking back, I wouldn’t change any of it. The struggles are what built the foundation for the business I have today.
We’ve been impressed with Waters Real Estate powered by Keller Williams of Washington Twp, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My business is built around one core mission: helping people move through one of the biggest transitions of their lives with clarity, strategy, and confidence, NOT stress and confusion.
I specialize in working with sellers, buyers, and homeowners who are trying to make that next move. Especially when it’s their first-time. I pride myself on educating my clients. That “in-between” phase—where you have to sell and buy at the same time—is where most people feel overwhelmed, and it’s where I’ve really built my expertise. I’ve created a structured approach to guide clients through that process in a way that feels organized, intentional, and manageable instead of chaotic.
What sets me apart is how much I focus on education and transparency. I don’t just open doors or list homes. I walk my clients through every step, explain the “why” behind every decision, and make sure they feel confident the entire time. I’m very honest, very hands-on, and very strategic about how I approach each situation.
I’m also known for how I market homes. I don’t rely on just putting a property on the MLS and hoping for the best. I use social media as a powerful tool to create demand, tell the story of a home, and get it in front of the right people. I’ve built a strong online presence where potential clients can actually see how I work before they ever reach out. This creates a level of trust that most agents don’t have, especially in our industry.
Brand-wise, I’m most proud of the fact that I’ve built something real and recognizable. “Your Favorite Local Realtor” isn’t just a tagline; it’s a reflection of the relationships I’ve built and the trust I’ve earned in my community. My brand blends real life, like being a mom of three, my fitness journey, cooking, and everyday moments, with real estate, which allows people to connect with me as a person first.
I want readers to know that when they work with me, they’re not just getting an agent—they’re getting someone who genuinely cares, who will guide them honestly, advocate for them, and make sure they’re making the best possible decisions for their situation.
At the end of the day, my goal is simple: I want people to feel supported, informed, and confident from start to finish. I want them to walk away knowing they had someone in their corner the entire time and beyond! I am always there for my clients way after the closing.
If we knew you growing up, how would we have described you?
Growing up, my life wasn’t picture-perfect at all, and I think that shaped a lot of who I am today.
I was raised by a single mom, and we didn’t always have much. From a young age, I learned that if I wanted something, it wasn’t just going to be handed to me; I really had to work for it. That mindset stuck with me early and became a big part of how I move through life now.
I also struggled with my weight growing up, and that came with its own challenges. I dealt with bullying and a lot of insecurity, and I didn’t always feel confident in myself. There wasn’t a lot of guidance around health, nutrition, or how to take care of my body, so for a long time, I was just figuring things out on my own.
But those experiences taught me resilience. They taught me how to push through discomfort, how to keep going even when things felt hard, and how to build myself up when the outside world didn’t always do that for me.
Later on in life, I found fitness, and that truly changed everything for me. It wasn’t just about losing weight. I’m proud to say I lost 110 pounds in 2023 and have kept it off, but more importantly, it was about gaining confidence, discipline, and taking control of my life. It became something that empowered me instead of something that held me back, and I got to share it all online to inspire others who may not have had the same guidance as I didn’t.
Now, as a mom, that part of my story means even more. I’m proud to say I’ve broken a lot of cycles. My kids get to experience things I didn’t, and they’re growing up in an environment where they feel supported, encouraged, and taught how to take care of themselves, things I had to learn on my own much later in life.
I truly believe that what makes someone special isn’t a perfect path. It’s everything they had to overcome to become who they are. And for me, those early struggles are exactly what built the foundation for the life and business I’ve created today.
