Hidden Gems: Meet Kimberly Boulos of Root Performance & Wellness

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberly Boulos.

Hi Kimberly, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My entrance into this business started in stadiums filled with 40,000+ fans as a pro soccer player. I spent my life dedicated to sport, and my 20s were spent living out of a duffle bag moving around the world to pursue my passion; but, despite working with the most revered trainers, coaches, and practitioners worldwide, I battled constant pain, injuries, and hormonal issues as a result of constant overtraining. As I battled back to the World Stage from 3 consecutive ACL surgeries, my passion for holistic means of recovery enlivened; but it was after returning to the pro stage after the birth of my first child that my eyes really opened to a gap in performance training.

As an athlete, nobody seemed to understand female physiology or what it meant to be a mother– they were incredible trainers, but had no understanding of what my body was going through months post childbirth and staying up late at night to breastfeed a baby that never slept. They didn’t understand my pelvic floor issues or that my pelvis felt like it was ripping in half with every sprint, or how I needed to adjust my meals to account for my changing postpartum hormones.

On the other side of things, the women’s health world had zero understanding of what it meant to be a female athlete. My pelvic floor PT had no concept of the demands my pelvic floor would need to be put under or how to progress my therapy to training; my birth coaches didn’t know how different birth and postpartum might be for someone who spent their life focused on performance; and my postpartum trainers did not understand the different needs of a body like mine to heal my severe diastasis (bird dogs were not going to cut it).

From there my passion & curiosity grew on both ends- why does the sports world not better understand female physiology, and why can’t I find anyone who “gets me” to help me have a nurturing birth experience. Also, why are some of the amazing tools we have in women’s sport not being used to help everyday women in pregnancy, childbirth, postpartum, & beyond.

From there, ROOT was born to bridge the gap between cutting-edge science from the sports world and a holistic understanding of women’s health.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Not at all. I’ve had so many late nights taking online classes as my babies slept on me, grinded as a single mom of two to find ways to both build my business AND be a present mom, changed states pretty suddenly for family/personal reasons and had to start again from scratch. I’ve had so many periods of doubt and so many moments to learn from, but I’ve tried to stay true to the core of my business– that every client who walks in the door feels safe, loved, and like they have someone who will truly listen to them, advocate for them, and give them the actual customized care they deserve. I’m also so grateful to have had so many amazing clients and mentors along the way to constantly remind me of how important this work is. Truly feel like all my clients are part of the ROOT family.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
We work across all ages and genders, but specialize in prenatal, postpartum, and trauma-informed services. We offer massage therapy, holistic pelvic health, birth doula services, completely customized birth coaching, personal training, & yoga fusion classes.

What sets us apart is that we take the highest understanding of holistic performance management and apply it to every client– whether that client is preparing to transition into parenthood for the first time, returning to sport from injury, or just hoping to feel as great as they can in their body, mind, and soul. We also allow clients to completely customize sessions as they see fit– so, if a postpartum client planned a training session but walks in physically and emotionally drained, we have no problem being flexible and shifting that session to yin yoga or massage. We highly value the subjective input from our clients and athletes, and help them uncover their potential rather than coming at them from a place of superiority.

What does success mean to you?
Understanding your purpose & values, and continuing towards them even through bumps in the road. It’s about taking risks to go for what you believe in, doing it with integrity/care/and gratitude, and not giving up just because times get tough.

Business, sport, life, and relationships are all the same– they constantly change, there are ups and downs, but there is always an opportunity for learning, growth, and gratitude in any situation.
