Today we’d like to introduce you to Melissa Wetherington.
Hi Melissa , so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My love for psychology began in high school during my senior year when I took an introductory course. At that time, I found mental health especially interesting and wanted to learn more. As I continued my studies, my curiosity about human behavior grew—particularly in understanding why we do the things we do and how we can grow. I went on to study psychology as an undergraduate and eventually earned my Master of Science in Mental Health Counseling in 2015.
Early in my career, I worked in a variety of mental health settings that helped me grow both personally and professionally. I spent several years working under supervision, continuing to build my clinical skills, before earning my license to practice independently.
I knew I wanted to build a private practice where I could focus on the areas of mental health I’m most passionate about, while also having the autonomy to continue learning and growing. In 2019, I started my private practice part-time while still working as an outpatient therapist in a hospital setting. Over time, I made the decision to leave and fully invest in my own practice.
Around that time, I also knew I wanted to start a family in the near future, and having more flexibility and balance was incredibly important to me. Building my telehealth practice allowed me to create a life that felt more aligned with my values and the direction I wanted to go.
One of the most meaningful parts of that journey has been the ability to continue growing and investing in myself—pursuing ongoing learning in areas that genuinely interest me and support my work with clients. Since becoming a mother, that decision has felt even more meaningful, allowing me to be present with my daughter while continuing to do the work I love.
Today, I continue to grow as both a therapist and a person, doing work that feels deeply aligned with who I am and the life I’ve intentionally built.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No, it hasn’t been a smooth road. My journey to becoming a mental health therapist has come with a number of challenges.
During graduate school, I balanced a full-time job, evening classes, and long commutes between home, work, and school. I was also navigating personal stressors, and at times it felt like I was just trying to get through each day.
When I began my internship, it was unpaid, and as the hours increased, I had to reduce my work to part-time and eventually stop working altogether. That period was both financially stressful and required a great deal of endurance.
After graduation, I spent several years working under supervision in complex and emotionally demanding settings while continuing to build my skills and confidence.
Starting my own practice brought a new set of challenges, including managing the administrative side of running a business. More recently, balancing my work with motherhood has added another layer that continues to require flexibility and adjustment.
While it hasn’t been easy, these experiences have helped me grow both professionally and personally and have shaped the therapist I am today.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
I own Nurturing Hearts Therapeutic Services, where I provide online therapy to clients across New Jersey. I work with individuals who are feeling overwhelmed, dealing with ongoing stress or worry, navigating relationship challenges, or trying to make sense of difficult life experiences.
What sets my work apart is my ability to genuinely connect with clients and help them move forward in a way that feels both supportive and intentional. I focus on helping clients recognize and build on their strengths while also supporting them through the areas where they feel stuck. I bring a balance of warmth, authenticity, and, when appropriate, humor, while also using evidence-informed strategies to guide the work.
I’m deeply committed to continued learning and growth, and I’m always expanding my knowledge in ways that support my clients. One area I’m especially interested in is neuroscience, and I use that understanding to help clients make sense of what they’re experiencing and apply it in ways that feel helpful in their daily lives. While understanding the “why” is important, the goal is to help clients create real, meaningful change so they can feel better.
I also place a strong emphasis on structure and clarity. I work collaboratively with clients to establish clear goals so they can track their progress and experience lasting change. My approach is both supportive and intentional—I want clients to feel safe and understood while also feeling that they are moving forward.
My practice is fully telehealth, which allows for flexibility and accessibility, meeting clients where they are both emotionally and physically.
What I’m most proud of is the space I’ve created—one that feels genuine, supportive, and growth-oriented, where clients can be themselves while working toward meaningful, lasting change.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, I remember being described as sweet, and my eighth-grade teacher later shared that even back then, she saw me as nurturing.
I enjoyed imaginative play and was drawn to creative activities. I loved dolls and Barbies and enjoyed art projects. At the same time, I went through a phase where I was a bit of a tomboy—I played sports like basketball and felt more comfortable in oversized T-shirts, looser-fitting jeans, and a ponytail than dressing up.
I’ve always been naturally curious and interested in learning, especially when it comes to understanding people and the world around me.
Personality-wise, I was more reserved when I was younger, but over time I became more outgoing and comfortable expressing myself.
