Today we’d like to introduce you to Rick Seaman.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Our story really started long before we opened the doors in January 2023. I spent years working as a Big Box district manager, but my wife and I always loved exploring Main Streets across New Jersey and Pennsylvania, finding small shops, discovering unique products, and just enjoying the experience of local communities.
On one of our favorite days walking through Montclair, she turned to me and said, “Babe… maybe you should do this.” It was one of those moments that stuck with me and eventually turned into something real.
I spent about a year searching for the right location. There were definitely moments where I thought it might not happen, but she kept encouraging me to keep going and check one more place.
That “one more place” ended up being Flemington.
When I came here, there was an energy you could feel, the local businesses, the sense of community, and the revitalization happening in town. While walking down Main Street, I came across an available space, wrote down the address, made the call, and within two weeks, we had our home.
From the beginning, I wanted The Happy Peacock to feel different. I’ve always had a bit of an eye for products, things that are eclectic, a little unexpected, and that make people smile or laugh. That’s really the heartbeat of the store.
My wife brings it all to life in a different way, through our marketing, social media, and the events that connect us to the community. She’s behind so much of how people experience us beyond the four walls.
At the end of the day, we just want people to walk in and say, “This place is fun.” And beyond the store itself, we’re really proud to be part of what’s happening in Flemington and to contribute to the energy of Main Street.
Opening The Happy Peacock wasn’t just about starting a business, it was about building something personal, creating joy for people, and becoming part of a community we truly believe in.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road and I think that’s the reality of any small business, especially a street-side retail shop.
A lot of what we do is influenced by things completely out of our control. Weather is a big one, if it’s raining or snowing foot traffic drops. Road closures in town can impact visibility and sales overnight. Those are the kinds of challenges you learn to navigate pretty quickly.
On top of that, being a newer business means you’re constantly working to get your name out there. Building awareness doesn’t happen overnight. We’ve had to be very intentional about that, participating in vendor events, showing up for local community events, and partnering with other small businesses to help build visibility.
It’s definitely a journey, and one that requires a lot of flexibility. We’re always learning, what products resonate, what events drive traffic, what works and what doesn’t. You have to be willing to pivot, keep things fresh, and not get too comfortable.
At the end of the day, we’re committed to making this work. The challenges are real, but so is the opportunity and that’s what keeps us going.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
The Happy Peacock is a street-side gift shop in the heart of Flemington, New Jersey, focused on bringing a little fun, personality, and surprise back into shopping.
We specialize in eclectic, thoughtfully curated gifts, everything from witty and slightly sassy finds to nostalgic toys, games, and unique pieces you won’t typically see in big box stores. The goal is simple: to create a space where people walk in not quite knowing what they’ll find, but always leaving with something that made them smile.
What really sets us apart is the experience. We’re not just selling products, we’re creating a feeling. The store is designed to be engaging, a little unexpected, and genuinely fun. It’s the kind of place where people laugh, pick things up they didn’t plan to buy, and say, “I’ve never seen this before.”
We’re also very connected to our community. Being part of Flemington’s Main Street matters to us, so we actively participate in local events, partner with other small businesses, and look for ways to bring people into the shop beyond just traditional retail.
From a brand perspective, what we’re most proud of is that The Happy Peacock feels personal. It reflects who we are; creative, a little bold, and focused on joy. In a world where so much retail feels the same, we’ve built something that stands out.
At the end of the day, we want people to know that if they’re looking for something different—something fun, memorable, or just a little unexpected—they’ll find it here.
Do you have any memories from childhood that you can share with us?
Summers at the Jersey Shore with my family. It was something we did every year growing up, and it’s one of those core memories that really stuck with me.
It’s still a tradition today, we continue it every year, now with a new generation of family members, which makes it even more special.
