Community Highlights: Meet Giorgi Sukhiashvili of Georgian Chess Academy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Giorgi Sukhiashvili.

Hi Giorgi, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Giorgi Sukhiashvili, and I am the co-founder of Georgian Chess Academy. I learned chess as a child in Georgia and have loved the game ever since. Chess has always been an important part of my life, both as a player and as a coach.

After moving to the United States in 2009, I continued playing and teaching chess. Over the years, I have taught students in schools, libraries, community programs, and private lessons throughout New York and New Jersey. I enjoy helping children learn not only chess, but also important skills such as focus, patience, confidence, and problem-solving.

My family has also been deeply involved in chess. My son, Alexander, became a U.S. Co-Champion and New Jersey State Champion. He earned the Candidate Master title and will represent Team USA at the World Youth Chess Championship in Italy. Seeing his success and love for the game inspired me even more to help other children reach their goals.

In 2023, I co-founded Georgian Chess Academy with Grandmaster Davit Jojua. Our goal is to make chess fun, educational, and available to more children. Today, we offer after-school programs, private lessons, online classes, tournaments, and summer camps.

The most rewarding part of this journey is seeing students improve their chess skills, gain confidence, make new friends, and enjoy learning. We look forward to helping even more children discover the benefits of chess in the years ahead.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it has not always been a smooth road. Starting a chess academy takes a lot of time, hard work, and patience. One of the biggest challenges was building the program while balancing work and family responsibilities.

It also takes time to earn the trust of schools and parents and show them the many benefits of chess. However, every challenge helped us grow and improve. Seeing our students succeed and enjoy chess makes all the hard work worth it.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Georgian Chess Academy?
The name of our organization is Georgian Chess Academy.

Georgian Chess Academy provides chess instruction for students of all ages and skill levels through after-school programs, private lessons, group classes, online training, tournaments, and summer camps. Our goal is to help students improve not only their chess skills but also their focus, critical thinking, patience, and confidence.

What makes us different is our combination of experienced coaches and a supportive learning environment. Our students learn from highly qualified instructors, including Grandmasters and Master-level players, while enjoying chess in a fun and encouraging atmosphere.

We are especially proud of our students’ achievements at local, state, national, and international tournaments. At the same time, we believe success is not only about winning trophies. We are proud when students become more confident, focused, and motivated both in chess and in life.

We want readers to know that chess is for everyone. Whether a student is just learning the rules or competing at a high level, we strive to make chess enjoyable, educational, and accessible to all.

We’d be interested to hear your thoughts on luck and what role, if any, you feel it’s played for you?
I believe luck plays a role in life, but success comes from hard work, persistence, and being ready when opportunities arise.

I have been fortunate to meet great mentors, coaches, students, and families who have supported our journey. At the same time, building a business requires dedication and patience, especially when starting from scratch.
One example of good fortune has been watching my son and many of our students achieve success in chess. Seeing them grow, win championships, and represent their communities and country is very rewarding. I am grateful for the opportunities we have had, but I also believe that consistent effort and passion are what turn those opportunities into success.
