Meet Syuzanna Arutyunyan of Sfumato Gallery

Today we’d like to introduce you to Syuzanna Arutyunyan.

Hi Syuzanna, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Sfumato Gallery was born from a simple belief: every talented artist deserves to be seen. For more than a decade, my husband and I dedicated our lives to building creative communities through art education. Together, we opened 4 art schools, helping thousands of students discover their talent, confidence, and artistic voice.
Although my background was in a completely different field, I was constantly surrounded by creativity and inspired by the transformative power of art. Along the way, I met countless talented artists who struggled to find opportunities to exhibit their work and connect with new audiences. That realization inspired me to take a leap of faith and create Sfumato Gallery, a space where both emerging and established artists can share their vision, tell their stories, and be celebrated.
The name Sfumato holds a special meaning for us. Over the years, we have traveled to Italy many times and have always been deeply inspired by the works of Leonardo da Vinci. Sfumato, one of his most famous painting techniques, creates soft transitions between light and shadow, allowing forms to emerge gradually rather than through hard lines. We were drawn not only to its beauty, but also to its philosophy, the idea that not everything needs to be clearly defined to be meaningful.
The name also feels deeply connected to my husband’s artistic practice as The Smoke Artist. His paintings often explore form, emotion, and identity through smoke-like imagery that appears and disappears, much like the essence of sfumato itself. While the gallery represents a diverse group of talented artists working across different styles and mediums, the name reflects our appreciation for art that invites curiosity, contemplation, and deeper connection.
What began as a dream to support artists has become a mission: to create a space where creativity is valued, emerging voices are encouraged, and art continues to bring people together.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Absolutely not. It has been anything but a smooth road, and honestly, that is what makes the journey worthwhile.
Every meaningful project comes with challenges, moments of doubt, and obstacles you never expected. There were times when things did not go as planned, when we had to make difficult decisions, take risks, and step into unfamiliar territory. Opening art schools, building a community, and now launching Sfumato Gallery all required a great deal of perseverance and faith.
But I have learned that challenges are not there to stop us. They are there to teach us. Every obstacle reveals something about who you are, what you value, and how much you are willing to grow. The difficult moments often become the most important ones because they force you to become more resilient, more creative, and more connected to your purpose.
As an immigrant who came to this country and built everything from the ground up, I understand that success is rarely a straight line. The beauty is not in avoiding the struggles. The beauty is in continuing despite them and creating something meaningful that can have a positive impact on other people’s lives.
Looking back, I would not change the difficult parts of the journey. They shaped me into the person I am today and made every accomplishment feel that much more rewarding.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Sfumato Gallery is a modern contemporary art gallery dedicated to discovering, supporting, and exhibiting both emerging and established artists. Our mission is to create meaningful connections between artists, collectors, and the community while providing a platform for powerful artistic voices to be seen and appreciated.
The gallery was founded after more than a decade of building creative communities through art education. Together with my husband, an internationally exhibited artist known as The Smoke Artist, we worked closely with thousands of artists and students. Through that journey, we recognized the need for a space where talented artists could showcase their work, share their stories, and grow their careers.
The name Sfumato was inspired by Leonardo da Vinci’s famous painting technique, which creates soft transitions between light and shadow. We have always been inspired by Italian art and culture, and the philosophy behind sfumato resonates deeply with us. It reflects the idea that beauty often exists in subtlety, mystery, and the space between what is seen and unseen. The name also naturally connects to my husband’s signature smoke-inspired artwork, although the gallery proudly represents artists working in a wide variety of styles and mediums.
What sets Sfumato Gallery apart is our commitment to both artistic excellence and human connection. We are not simply a place to display artwork. We are a creative hub where artists are encouraged to take risks, explore new ideas, and engage in meaningful conversations with collectors and visitors. We believe that great art should inspire curiosity, emotion, and reflection.
What I am most proud of is creating a space that welcomes both accomplished artists and undiscovered talent. Every artist starts somewhere, and we want Sfumato Gallery to be a place where creativity is celebrated, opportunities are created, and extraordinary work finds its audience. At its core, Sfumato Gallery is about people, stories, and the transformative power of art.
