Today we’d like to introduce you to Alison Causer.
Hi Alison, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I am an artist who primarily paints. I started working as a decorative painter after the pandemic, post-grad school. After working with a few mixed-gender crews, I realized I wanted to start my own company, with a focus on working with artists and artisans.
After grad school, post-pandemic, I realized how so many of my fellow artist friends, including myself, were struggling to find work that would allow us to make enough money to make our art and still have a job. At the time, I was working with a decorative painter and friend who introduced me to the world of Decorative Arts. He taught me a lot of basic material knowledge, craftsmanship, and how to operate in a commercial setting.
I realized that there is a lot of opportunity at the cross-section of the construction industry and fine arts. After a few years of learning and building confidence, I formed Artist Painting Company.
When I started Arist Painting Company, I didn’t want it to be about me or my craft and skill. I am a teacher at heart, my goal is to teach other people these skills. While researching, I learned from a NY census that MFA and Art History graduates are some of the most educated and underemployed post-pandemic. In the USA, we are producing all these professionally educated artists and Art Historians, and there are few jobs for them. I also am a firm believer that the construction industry is full of artisans who know one acknowledges due to our cultural framing of the industry.
My father was a pipefitter by trade, but from my vantage point, he is a craftsman and artisan. I got to experience his artistry in our home growing up. His reverence for natural materials and the integrity with which he approached building or renovating our log cabin home.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The biggest and most satisfying struggle is the human element. Building trust with clients about the level of labor and time required to create the finish they desire, and communicating with my painters.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
At the moment, we do a lot of limewash, base painting, and plaster. We would like to expand into more landscape mural work and specialize in unique finishes.
