Today we’d like to introduce you to James DeSalvo.
Hi James, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Back in the days after military service, and after entering New York City Technical College in Brooklyn, NY, I started a long career in the printing industry. This was and still is a wide reaching industry covering straight printing, publishing, advertising, packaging, direct mail and so much more. I took to the technical and operational side of the business to start. I worked with some of the most brilliant technicians, engineers and creative minds in the country. Later in this career, I moved over to the business user side of the fence. This move allowed me to transfer my skill sets to management roles in advertising agencies and later to the corporate pharmaceutical business in the top companies in the world.
It was during those corporate years where I worked with creative and marketing staffs when I picked up my camera as a hobby which turned into a passion to capture the beauty of the country and the many faces of those and who wanted to capture memories of their lives and family. From marriages to birth of their first child, I took to this role, not as a chore, but as a pleasure to create life long memories for all that my camera embrace. Still to this day and after 15 years, I still get calls from those clients/friends to thank me for these images which are now shared with their children and friends.
Photography is not an easy path, but like any job choice, if you love it, you never work a day in your life.
Present day, I work with many real estate agents and some builders who I offer stills, floor plans, walk-through video and drone coverage. Additionally, I have combined my love for music and respect of stage artists, musicians and vocalists, to capture those photos which represents their talents.
So here I am, loving what I do and offering respectable images to those who requests my eye and skill sets. I am a lucky guy.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
The decision to start and/or change career direction was a calculated change. I spent 35 years in my previous career. It was a great journey, which supported building a profession and more importantly provided for my family. The short story is that photography and my trained eye was the perfect transition, but not without the challenges of building a company in a somewhat crowded business model. So how did I get from there to here? Hard work and many hours of editing, equipment care, networking and utilizing social media to expose my talent. It is worth it. Anything of value is.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
The choice of positioning my business toward real estate marketing/photography was developed through an opportunity to make my bones with a Utah based company. They needed a local photographer and I jumped at the chance to gain experience in a market that typically is solid. Still true today, this role is demanding as is the real estate market itself. Luckily enough to have 10 clients who require my services regularly, I have to say that business is built on accountability and relationship building. I am very lucky to have a tight relationship with my clients.
As I alluded earlier, more than half the building of a business is relationship building and managing client retention. I am proud to maintain the ethics and the talent to have my clients coming back.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
Most importantly, listening to your clients needs and being able to interpert their direction correctly is critical to have them coming back. Equally as important is to have the talent and being able to exceed expectations is constantly is critical.
