Today we’d like to introduce you to Kathryn Rizzitello-Smith.
Hi Kathryn, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My story is one that may seem like many others. I started doing photography as a child and had a focus on nature and animals, up until the point in my late teens that a friend asked for assistance in creating her makeup artist portfolio. Seeing how I could photograph people and still tell stories – different stories than what nature brings – immediately had me hooked.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It’s never a smooth road. If you are on a journey and you have nothing much smooth sailing, something is wrong.
Struggles with a photography business, especially in today’s day and age, are ones that affect many creatives right now.
The rise of cell phones that take near DSLR level images. The influx of AI being used to create or manipulate images – with or without permission. The lack of bookings – not because it’s not wanted, but because photography is currently considered a luxury that most cannot afford and still pay their bills.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am an emotive photographer, with a passion for conceptual, story-telling photographs. My favorite type of shoot is when a client comes to me with a story they would like to bring to life through photos, with heavy collaboration to create the final subject.
I believe part of what sets me apart – as well as part of what I am known for – is aside from photography, I have over a decade of modeling experience, years of burlesque and cosplay experience, and work with a stage combat theater group that routinely puts on shows, every year getting bigger and better. All of these components allow me to bring a different view to photography. That, and the pure joy of having someone be excited throughout their session, whether it is their first time or tenth.
