Today we’d like to introduce you to Doctor Sahila.
Hi Doctor, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Hi, I’m Dr. Sahila.
I came to America 25 years ago, became an Internal Medicine physician, and built the life I had dreamed of.
Then everything changed.
I watched my father suffer through heart and kidney failure, and my mother spend seven years in a vegetative state from brain cancer. I was their doctor. I gave them everything modern medicine had to offer—but I couldn’t reduce their suffering.
Then I became the patient myself—struggling with depression, medications, weight gain, and a marriage falling apart.
Desperate for another way, I began studying yoga, Ayurveda, and ancient healing practices alongside my medical knowledge.
Within a year, my life transformed. I became pill-free, rebuilt my relationships, and found my purpose.
That’s when Dr. Nirmala became Dr. Sahila—Sahila means guide.
Today, I help others find the path to better health that I once desperately searched for myself.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I faced ridicule and humiliation when I tried to change my style of practice. What I believed in and taught my clients took time, and it wasn’t covered by insurance. As a result, only motivated clients who believed in me—and who were seeking a transformation similar to the one I had experienced—came to my practice.
Now, after writing four books on healing and helping hundreds of people transform their health, I feel much more confident in the Sahila System. I feel ready to take it forward and bring it to the masses.
Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Wellness with Sahila was born from my belief that healthcare should go beyond managing symptoms—it should help people understand and address the root causes affecting their health.
As a physician trained in Internal Medicine, I spent years practicing conventional medicine before my own personal and family experiences led me to explore a more integrative approach. Today, I bring together modern medical knowledge with yoga, nutrition, strength training, breathwork, meditation, and sustainable lifestyle change.
What sets us apart is that I don’t look at health in isolated pieces. I look at the whole person—their metabolic health, movement, nutrition, stress, sleep, emotional well-being, and daily habits—and help them build a lifestyle they can actually sustain.
Through the Sahila System, I primarily work with adults struggling with metabolic and lifestyle-related concerns such as weight gain, prediabetes, diabetes, high cholesterol, and low energy.
What I’m most proud of is that Wellness with Sahila is not built around quick fixes or another temporary diet. It is built around education and empowerment. My goal is for people to understand their bodies, become active participants in their health, and build habits that can serve them for the rest of their lives.
At its heart, Sahila means “guide.” That is exactly what I want this brand to be—a trusted guide who can heal and reverse metabolic illnesses which accounts for more than 50% of todays illnesses in USA.
Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I was a curious and ambitious child, but also very independent. i grew up in modest low middle class family culture. I was always asking questions and trying to understand why things worked the way they did. That curiosity eventually drew me toward science, medicine, and understanding the human body.
At the same time, I grew up in India surrounded by traditions like yoga, Ayurveda, spirituality, and meditation. Interestingly, I didn’t appreciate their significance when I was young. I was much more attracted to science, achievement, and the modern world. It was only later, after becoming a physician and going through difficult experiences in my own life, that I returned to many of the traditions I had grown up around and began looking at them through a scientific and medical lens.
Personality-wise, I have always been determined. When I believe in something, I tend to pursue it deeply. Looking back, that combination of curiosity, determination, and questioning conventional thinking has shaped both the person and physician I am today.
