Today we’d like to introduce you to Joshua Lutz.
Hi Joshua, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I started my career on an internship at Electric Lady Studios in NYC which turned into a three year employment. There, I worked with artists like Guns N Roses, Lil Wayne, Maroon 5 and Joss Stone. I then opened my own studio 15 min outside of Manhattan called JML Studios where I work full time in audio. I most recently served as Audio tech specialist on the Bob Dylan biopic, “A Complete Unknown” as well as the Bruce Springsteen biopic, “Deliver Me From Nowhere” in addition to other films like Miami Vice, Trust The Man and A Quiet Place part 3.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road has been extremely difficult at times. Like most creatives, when we find ourselves between jobs we question everything and even indulge imposter syndrome from time to time however, in 2020 I murdered those demons and learned to control the narrative in my head. A friend sent me a video of a man telling the camera to stop being mean to his friend (he meant the viewer here) and start showing yourself the kind of patience and forgiveness we give to everyone else around us. I realized, who less am I that I don’t deserve the same kind of forgiveness I give people that sometimes don’t even deserve it? Later that year I attended a seminar where I discovered 70% of our bad thoughts are the same 10 moments of regret and self-doubt on repeat like a evil Spotify playlist in our minds. I practiced stopping those thoughts and replaced them with hope and gratitude and within 6 months I found myself teaching Timothee Chalamet how to use the outboard gear and microphones I provided as Audio Tech Specialist on the Bob Dylan biopic, “A Complete Unknown.” It was like arcane magic.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I play over 50 musical instruments and compose music for film and TV. The east coast film unions have labeled me the go to provider for mics and outboard so I work alot in musical related films like biopics lately. I also build custom gear like mics and plate reverbs for artists like Panic At The Disco, Ben Folds and The Strokes. My super power is songwriting and composition. I love to perform on stage as well but feel most comfortable in a scoring or tracking session at my home base, JML Studios.
What does success mean to you?
To me, success has nothing to do with any of this stuff you read here. When my kid hugs me and tells me he loves me, or I am given another day of sun on my face and my life has peace, that is success to me. The fact I’ve been with the same woman for 20 years and am more in love with her than ever, I feel like I won the lotto of life. Making a great record is fun too but in the grand scheme of things, it is utterly meaningless and doesn’t hold a candle to peace in my life, or helping someone else who is struggling to find it.
