Inspiring Conversations with Matthew Rosenberg of M&R Landscaping & Design

Today we’d like to introduce you to Matthew Rosenberg.

Matthew, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
This is the second generation of ownership of M&R Landscaping.

M&R was founded/owned/operated by Emanuel “Manny” Carlino for 36 years.

In 2025, Manny sold the business to Matt Rosenberg.

Manny met Matt after Matt’s wife hired Manny to do landscaping work at their house. Manny, Matt and Jenn started to talk about the business, it’s value, income, and how it was operated.

Matt had been looking for local businesses to acquire before meeting Manny. Matt and Jenn both worked at a Big 4 accounting firm as Directors. With two young children (at the time, 2.5 and 6 months old), the Big 4 hours were putting stress on Matt’s family. Matt believed that owning a local business could provide income and added flexibility that would help the family into the future.

After months of negotiations and diligence, in January 2025, Matt closed on the business. Manny has stayed on to continue to advise and assist with strategic decision making to grow the business, managing operations, delivering certain projects requiring technical expertise, while Matt has been focused on day-to-day management and investments in systems, processes, and people. In the two years since close, the business has grown over 30%!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Owning a small business comes with tons of obstacles. You have to be willing to push through challenges with a positive attitude every day. Be ready to get punched in the gut and keep moving forward!

Over 37 years, the challenges have been different. Our Company started with Manny mowing lawns in the early 90’s as a side hustle, saving every dollar to re-invest into growth.

As the Company grows, challenges change – whether it is building a brand / reputation (which must be maintained), creating and delivering new services, optimizing service quality for all customers, utilizing new technology, training and retaining employees, or maximizing profitability despite strong competition.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about M&R Landscaping & Design?

We are very proud of our reputation and want customers to know our Company and team loves helping them. We’re committed to doing great work for our customers because there’s no greater satisfaction than a happy customer.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
It’s hard to pick one!

1) What got you here, won’t get you there. As your goals change, your approach may need to also!

2) You have to put in the work to build skills. Like interest, knowledge has compounding returns. Keep investing in yourself and your skill sets and you will see the returns over time.

3) Challenges are opportunities to grow more. When the going gets tough, the tough get going. You have to meet challenges head on.

4) Invest in people and culture. When you lead with strong value systems, your people and company will adopt them. A culture of caring for each other can change employee retention, satisfaction, and customer service quality!

5) When you have issues, it’s typically an opportunity to build trust – whether that is with your people or with your clients. Use issues as opportunities to define your brand!
